PRINSES BEATRIX BENADRUKT NATUURBESCHERMING EN GEMEENSCHAPSINITIATIEVEN OP BONAIRE EN SINT-EUSTATIUS

Kralendijk,- Hare Koninklijke Hoogheid Prinses Beatrix, beschermvrouwe van de Dutch Caribbean Nature Alliance (DCNA), heeft haar bezoek aan Bonaire en Sint-Eustatius afgerond. Van 18 tot en met 21 november 2025 bezocht zij diverse natuur- en gemeenschapsinitiatieven.

Het bezoek stond in het teken van de toewijding van de eilanden aan natuurbescherming en gemeenschapsprojecten, met bijzondere aandacht voor milieurestauratie en sociale initiatieven die mensen verbinden met de natuur in het Nederlands Caribisch gebied. “Dit bezoek gaf ons de kans om het belang van natuur in het gehele Nederlands Caribisch gebied te benadrukken en om dieper in te gaan op de cruciale habitats die onze eilanden ondersteunen.

Het komt op een betekenisvol moment, nu we ons nieuwe Key Habitats Program hebben gelanceerd. Dit programma brengt alle zes eilanden samen om de ecosystemen waar we allemaal afhankelijk van zijn te versterken en te herstellen.” Arno Verhoeven, Directeur, DCNA Bonaire: Verbinding tussen jeugd, natuur en herstel Prinses Beatrix begon haar bezoek op Bonaire met STINAPA Bonaire in Washington Slagbaai Nationaal Park, een ruig beschermd gebied met cactusbossen, zoutvlaktes en kalksteenplateaus waar enkele van de meest iconische soorten van het eiland voorkomen. Haar bezoek viel samen met het Festival di Planta Palu, een jaarlijks boomplantfestival voor basisschoolleerlingen dat de liefde voor de natuur viert. Samen met lokale leerlingen plantte de Prinses een boom als symbool van langdurige betrokkenheid bij herbebossing en milieubescherming.

Daarna maakte ze met STINAPA-medewerkers een rondgang door het park om meer te leren over de geschiedenis, ecologische betekenis en lopende natuur- en herstelprojecten. “Het was een voorrecht om Hare Koninklijke Hoogheid te mogen verwelkomen in Washington Slagbaai Nationaal Park, een levend symbool van STINAPA’s inzet om de unieke landschappen en soorten van Bonaire te behouden. Haar bezoek brengt nieuwe aandacht en energie voor onze missie.

Tijdens een rondleiding door de kas en tuin hoorde ze hoe het herstel van inheemse vegetatie bijdraagt aan het vasthouden van zoet water, het stabiliseren van de bodem en het herstel van biodiversiteit op Bonaire. “We voelen ons vereerd met het bezoek van Prinses Beatrix. Ze was zeer onder de indruk van wat we de afgelopen jaren samen met al onze vrijwilligers hebben bereikt. Het was een groot genoegen en een eer om haar ons werk te laten zien en haar rond te leiden door onze kwekerijen en inheemse tuin.”

Tera Barra Op woensdag 19 november bezocht de Prinses de Mangrove Maniacs aan de zuidkust van Bonaire om te zien hoe zij mangrovebossen herstellen die de kust beschermen en een belangrijke kraamkamer vormen voor vele soorten. Samen met STINAPA’s Junior Rangers plantte ze rode mangroven en sprak ze met jongeren over hun inzet voor de bescherming van het eiland. “Het bezoek van Prinses Beatrix aan de zuidelijke wetlands betekende veel voor ons team.

De pas geplante mangroven die ze zag, slaan al aan en spelen een cruciale rol in de bescherming van onze kust tegen extreem weer en stijgende zeespiegel. Prinses Beatrix bezocht het kantoor en laboratorium van RRFB om jonge koralen uit het kweekprogramma te zien en besprak met het team hoe gemeenschapsgerichte restauratie hoop biedt voor de toekomst van de koraalriffen. “RRFB was enorm trots om Prinses Beatrix te mogen verwelkomen en haar ons koraalherstelwerk van dichtbij te laten zien. Ernst Noyons, Chief Operating Officer, RRFB Sint-Eustatius: Herbebossing, bedreigde soorten en jeugdparticipatie Op vrijdag 21 november bezocht Prinses Beatrix Sint Eustatius, waar haar programma in het teken stond van herbebossing, biodiversiteit en jeugdparticipatie. De dag begon bij de ReforeStatia-kwekerij van de St. Eustatius National Parks Foundation (STENAPA), waar inheemse bomen en struiken worden gekweekt om de droge bossen van het eiland te herstellen en erosie te verminderen. Terrestrische rangers begeleidden de Prinses door de kwekerij en legden uit hoe inheemse soorten bijdragen aan klimaatresistentie, bodembehoud en ondersteuning van lokale fauna. Tijdens haar bezoek kreeg Hare Koninklijke Hoogheid ook een toelichting over de bescherming van de Antilliaanse leguaan (Iguana delicatissima), een inheemse en inmiddels ernstig bedreigde soort. In een bijzonder moment liet een STENAPA-medewerker in haar bijzijn een leguaan vrij in het wild, als symbool van de voortdurende inspanningen om de unieke fauna van het eiland te beschermen.

Het bezoek werd afgesloten met de officiële opening van het Kings Well National Parks Center, het nieuwe hoofdkantoor van STENAPA. Caribbean Nature Alliance (DCNA), has completed her visit to Bonaire and St. Eustatius, visiting
nature and community initiatives from November 18th to 21st, 2025. The visit celebrated the
islands’ dedication to nature conservation and community initiatives, with a special focus on
environmental restoration and social projects that connect people with nature across the Dutch
Caribbean.
“This visit gave us the chance to highlight the importance of nature across the Dutch Caribbean
and to take a closer look at the critical habitats that support our islands. It comes at a
meaningful moment, as we have just launched our new Key Habitats Program, which brings all
six islands together to strengthen and restore the ecosystems we all depend on.” Arno

Bonaire: Connecting Youth, Nature, and Restoration
Princess Beatrix began her visit on Bonaire with STINAPA Bonaire in Washington Slagbaai
National Park, a rugged protected area of cactus forests, salt flats, and limestone terraces that
shelter some of the island’s most iconic species. Her visit coincided with Festival di Planta Palu,
an annual tree-planting event for primary school children that celebrates a love for nature.
Together with local students, the Princess planted a tree, symbolizing long-term commitment to
reforestation and environmental stewardship. She then toured the park with STINAPA staff to
learn more about its history, ecological significance, and ongoing conservation and restoration
work.
“It was a privilege for us to welcome Her Royal Highness to Washington Slagbaai National Park,
one of the living symbols of STINAPA’s commitment to preserving the unique landscapes and
species of Bonaire. Her visit brings renewed attention and energy to our mission. It reminds us

Later that afternoon, Princess Beatrix visited Tera Barra, Bonaire’s native plant nursery, where
volunteers cultivate trees and shrubs for reforestation projects island-wide. Walking through the
greenhouse and garden, she heard how restoring native vegetation supports freshwater
storage, soil stabilization, and biodiversity recovery across Bonaire.

accomplished with all our volunteers these past few years. It was a joy and a privilege to show

On Wednesday, November 19th, the Princess joined the Mangrove Maniacs on Bonaire’s south
coast to see how they are restoring mangrove forests that protect coastlines and provide critical
nursery habitat for many species. Together with STINAPA’s Junior Rangers, she planted red
mangrove trees and spoke with the youth about their experiences protecting the island’s natural
environment.

planted mangroves she saw are already taking root, and they play a key role in protecting our

The visit continued with a stop at Reef Renewal Foundation Bonaire (RRFB), where staff
demonstrated how active coral restoration contributes to reef resilience amid growing climate
pressures. Princess Beatrix toured the RRFB office and lab facilities to see young corals from
their breeding program and discussed with the team how community-led restoration is building
hope for the future of coral reefs.

On Friday, November 21st, Princess Beatrix visited St. Eustatius, where her program focused
on reforestation, biodiversity, and youth engagement.
She started the day at the ReforeStatia nursery, operated by the St. Eustatius National Parks
Foundation (STENAPA), which grows native trees and shrubs to restore the island’s dry forests
and reduce erosion. Terrestrial Rangers guided the Princess through the nursery, explaining
how native species strengthen climate resilience, stabilize soils, and support local wildlife.
During her visit, Her Royal Highness also received a briefing on the protection of the Antillean
iguana (Iguana delicatissima), a native species now critically endangered. In a powerful
moment, a STENAPA staff member released an iguana into the wild in her presence,
symbolizing ongoing efforts to safeguard the island’s unique wildlife.
In the afternoon, Princess Beatrix visited the Government Guest House, where STENAPA
