DUO BIEDT HULP AAN OUD-STUDENTEN IN CARIBISCH GEBIED

In november ontvangen mensen met een studieschuld bij DUO bericht over het maandbedrag dat zij in 2027 moeten terugbetalen.

Het is belangrijk om dit bericht goed door te nemen en te controleren of het maandbedrag klopt. Wie meer informatie wil of hulp nodig heeft, kan in november terecht bij de servicekantoren van DUO in het Caribisch gebied.

Controleer maandbedrag Het is belangrijk dat oud-studenten het bericht van DUO goed bekijken. Is het maandbedrag berekend zonder rekening te houden met hun inkomen? Dan kunnen zij hun inkomen zelf doorgeven.

Zo voorkomen zij dat ze mogelijk meer terugbetalen dan nodig is. Afhankelijk van hun inkomen kan het maandbedrag voor 2027 zelfs op nul uitkomen.

Op de servicekantoren kunnen oud-studenten terecht voor meer informatie en hulp krijgen. Om het maandbedrag te berekenen, is het handig om inkomensverklaringen over 2024 en 2025 mee te nemen.

Hulp bij vragen over de studieschuld Een studieschuld terugbetalen lukt niet altijd zonder problemen. Soms ontstaat er een betalingsachterstand of is het onduidelijk wat iemand moet betalen.

Oud studenten kunnen met al hun vragen terecht bij het servicekantoor. DUO medewerkers nemen de tijd om naar hun situatie te luisteren, uitleg te geven en samen te kijken welke mogelijkheden er zijn.

Ook bij terugbetalen in lokale valuta en problemen met inloggen in Mijn DUO helpen zij graag. Zo krijgen oud-studenten meer duidelijkheid over hun studieschuld en de stappen die zij kunnen zetten.

DUO bezoekt Bonaire van 2 tot en met 6 november. Daarna Aruba (9 tot en met 20 november) en Sint Maarten (23 tot en met 27 november).

Op Saba is DUO aanwezig op 30 november en 1 december en op Sint Eustatius op 2 en 3 december. Op Curaçao is sinds april 2025 een servicekantoor geopend voor een langere periode. Voorlichting voor aankomende studenten en ouders DUO organiseert ook voorlichtingsbijeenkomsten voor jongeren die in Nederland willen studeren en hun ouders.

Dit gebeurt op Bonaire, Aruba, Curaçao, en Sint Maarten in samenwerking met Nederlandse hogescholen.

Tijdens de bijeenkomsten krijgen aankomende studenten uitleg over studeren in Nederland en de voorbereidingen die daarbij komen kijken.

 Ook vertellen Caribische studenten die al in Nederland studeren over hun ervaringen.

DUO OFFERS SUPPORT TO FORMER STUDENTS IN THE CARIBBEAN

In November, people with student loan debt with DUO (Dienst Uitvoering Onderwijs, DUO) will be notified of the monthly repayment amount they will have to pay in 2027.

 It is important to read this notification carefully and check that the monthly amount is correct. Anyone who wants to find out more, or needs help, can visit the DUO service centres in the Caribbean in November.

If the monthly amount has been calculated without taking their income into account, they can declare their income themselves.

Doing that will help them avoid possibly repaying more than is necessary. Depending on their income, the monthly amount for 2027 could even be zero.

Former students can visit the service offices to obtain additional information and assistance. In order to calculate the monthly amount, it is helpful if they take income statements for 2024 and 2025 with them.

Help with questions about student debt Repaying a student debt is not always a straightforward matter.

Payment arrears can sometimes occur, or it may be unclear how much someone has to pay. Former students can contact the service office with any questions they may have.

 DUO staff will take time to listen to the circumstances of their situation, explain things and work with them to explore the available options.

They are also happy to help with repayments in local currency and any problems logging in to ‘My DUO’. The aim is to provide former students with greater clarity about their student debt and the steps they can take.

DUO staff will be visiting Bonaire from 2 to 6 November. This will be followed by visits to Aruba (9 to 20 November) and St. Maarten (23 to 27 November).

 DUO staff will then be visiting Saba on 30 November and 1 December, and St. Eustatius on 2 and 3 December.

 A longer-term service centre has been open on Curaçao since April 2025. Information for prospective students and parents DUO is also organising information sessions for young people who wish to study in the Netherlands and their parents.

These sessions are going to take place on Bonaire, Aruba, Curaçao and St. Maarten in collaboration with Dutch universities of applied sciences.

During the sessions, prospective students will be provided with information about studying in the Netherlands and the preparations they would need to make.

Caribbean students who are already studying in the Netherlands will also talk about their experiences.
