KONING, MINISTER-PRESIDENT EN STAATSSECRETARIS VAN BINNENLANDSE ZAKEN EN KONINKRIJKSRELATIES BEZOEKEN SINT EUSTATIUS TER GELEGENHEID VAN 250 JAAR THE FIRST SALUTE.

Oranjestad,- Zijne Majesteit de Koning woont op maandagochtend 16 november de herdenking van 250 jaar The First Salute op Sint Eustatius bij. Ook minister-president Rob Jetten en de staatssecretaris van Binnenlandse Zaken en Koninkrijksrelaties Eric van der Burg zijn bij de herdenkingsceremonie. Daarnaast bezoekt Koning Willem-Alexander enkele projecten van de Regio Deal Statia 2026. Dit zijn projecten die op Sint Eustatius bijdragen aan duurzame economische ontwikkeling, herstel van cultureel erfgoed en verbeteren van de kwaliteit van leven op Sint Eustatius.

Na het bezoek aan Fort Amsterdam en de batterij Rotterdam, dat in het teken staat van het slavernijverleden, zal minister-president Jetten een ander programma volgen.

Geschiedenis van Sint Eustatius

Koning Willem- Alexander en minister- president Rob Jetten komen zondagmiddag aan op Sint- Eustatius waar gezaghebber Alida Francis hen begroet.

In de avond bezoekt het gezelschap het historische Fort Oranje waar een geluid- en lichtshow de geschiedenis van Sint Eustatius verbeeldt. Ook is er een optreden van zangeres Shirma Rouse.

Op uitnodiging van gezaghebber Francis gaat het gezelschap later op de avond naar de Knippenga Estate voor een officieel diner met vertegenwoordigers van de Statiaanse gemeenschap.

Maandag 16 november

Herdenking van The First Salute

Met een erewacht wordt Koning Willem-Alexander in de vroege ochtend opgewacht door gezaghebber Francis om de herdenking van 250 jaar The First Salute bij te wonen.

Na het hijsen van de vlaggen start het plenaire gedeelte met het zingen van de volksliederen en het welkomstwoord van gezaghebber Francis.  Daarna zal de Koning een toespraak houden. Met deelname van een Amerikaans schip volgt het re-enactment (saluutschoten) waarmee de herdenking voor 250 jaar onafhankelijkheid van de Verenigde Staten wordt afgesloten.

Opening Museum Fort Oranje

Het Museum Fort Oranje staat binnen de muren van Fort Oranje en vertelt de geschiedenis vanaf The First Salute door de ogen van tot slaafgemaakten. Door informatie en verhalen te delen wordt de slavernijgeschiedenis van het eiland voor bezoekers zichtbaar gemaakt. Na de openingshandeling door de Koning maakt de delegatie een rondgang door het museum. Tijdens de rondleiding spreken zij met enkele vertegenwoordigers van musea en organisaties die de totstandkoming van het museum op Sint Eustatius mede mogelijk hebben gemaakt.

Parade

Tijdens de jaarlijkse herdenking van Statia Day is het gebruikelijk dat padvinders en andere geüniformeerde groepen zich opstellen voor de parade. Koning Willem-Alexander en de delegatie zijn op het centrale plein in Oranjestad aanwezig om hen te groeten.

Fietstocht VR-zuilen

Ook maakt Koning Willem-Alexander een fietstocht langs VR-zuilen. De zuilen maken deel uit van de Digital Heritage Route en is een onderdeel van De Regio Deal Statia 2026. De zuilen zijn uitgerust met QR-codes en staan strategisch opgesteld bij belangrijke erfgoedlocaties op het eiland. Aan het begint van de fietstocht onthult de Koning de eerste zuil waarmee de route officieel is geopend.

Ontbijt

Na de fietstocht gaat de Koning naar de ontbijtlocatie waar hij met Statianen spreekt over leven op het eiland.

Fort Amsterdam en batterij Rotterdam

Vervolgens vertrekken de Koning en de delegatie naar een ander project van de Regio Deal: Fort Amsterdam en batterij Rotterdam. Hier wordt een gedenkplek verwezenlijkt met aandacht voor het slavernijverleden. De gedenkplek komt op de plaats waar duizenden tot slaafgemaakten aan land werden gebracht. Midden in Fort Amsterdam stond een gebouw van twee verdiepingen met lange galerijen. Beneden werden de tot slaafgemaakte mannen gevangengezet en boven de vrouwen. Hier was ook de markt voor de doorverkoop, naar plantages in de rest van het Caribisch gebied en Amerika. Na de afschaffing werd slavernij een taboe en is het fort met opzet verwaarloosd om de geschiedenis weg te stoppen. Koning Willem-Alexander en premier Rob Jetten wandelen over het terrein, krijgen een toelichting op de restauratieplannen en spreken met leden van het Herdenkingscomité Slavernijverleden en met jongeren over de rol van dit verleden in hun leven.

Middagprogramma

Verpleeghuis

Daarna gaat Koning Willem-Alexander naar een verpleeghuis waar hij wordt bijgepraat over de stand van zaken aangaande een nieuw te bouwen centrum. De ambitie is om hierin het verpleeghuis, het ziekenhuis, de apotheek, Mental Health Care en de GGD samen te huisvesten. Ook dit centrum is onderdeel van de Regio Deal en benadrukt het belang van goede zorg dichtbij voor alle inwoners op het eiland. Ook spreekt de Koning met enkele bewoners en genodigde ouderen over het leven op Statia, tradities, herinneringen en de veranderingen op het eiland die zij hebben meegemaakt.

Appeltjeswinnaar Mega-D Youth Foundation

In de middag bezoekt de Koning appeltjes winnaar Mega-D Youth Foundation. Deze organisatie zorgt dat jongeren op Sint Eustatius niet alleen eten krijgen, maar ook de kans om zich te ontwikkelen. Tijdens naschoolse programma’s krijgen kinderen eten, huiswerkbegeleiding en activiteiten waarbij spelen en leren samenkomen. Zo stimuleert de stichting positieve waarden, een gezonde levensstijl en onderwijs bij jongeren. Koning Willem-Alexander krijgt een rondleiding door het pand en spreekt met begeleiders en jongeren.

Sociale woningbouw

Het bezoek van de Koning aan Sint Eustatius wordt afgesloten met een wandeling door de wijk Golden Rock waar sociale woningbouwwoningen worden gerenoveerd. Koning Willem-Alexander loopt door de wijk en spreekt met bewoners over het wonen in de wijk en het belang van renovatie.

In addition, King Willem-Alexander will visit several projects associated with the Regio Deal Statia 2026. Sunday, 15 November
History of St. Eustatius
King Willem-Alexander and Prime Minister Rob Jetten will arrive on St. Eustatius on Sunday afternoon, where they will be welcomed by Island Governor Alida Francis.

In the evening, the delegation will visit the historic Fort Oranje, where a light and sound show will depict the history of St. Eustatius. There will also be a performance by singer Shirma Rouse.

At the invitation of Island Governor Francis, the delegation will proceed later in the evening to Knippenga Estate for an official dinner with representatives of the Statian community.

Monday, 16 November
Commemoration of The First Salute
King Willem-Alexander will be received early in the morning with an honour guard by Island Governor Francis to attend the commemoration of the 250^th anniversary of The First Salute.

Following the raising of the flags, the plenary section will begin with the singing of the national anthems and a welcoming address by Island Governor Francis. The King will then deliver a speech. Featuring the participation of an American vessel, a re-enactment (salute shots) will follow, concluding the commemoration marking 250 years of United States independence.

Opening of Fort Oranje Museum
Located within the walls of Fort Oranje, the Fort Oranje Museum tells the history from The First Salute onward through the eyes of enslaved people. By sharing information and personal stories, the island’s slavery history is made visible to visitors. Following the ceremonial opening by the King, the delegation will tour the museum. During the guided tour, they will speak with representatives of museums and organizations that helped make the establishment of the museum on St. Eustatius possible.

Parade
During the annual commemoration of Statia Day, it is traditional for scouts and other uniformed groups to align for the parade. King Willem-Alexander and the delegation will be present at the central square in Oranjestad to greet them.

Bicycle Tour & Virtual Reality (VR) Columns
King Willem-Alexander will also take a bicycle tour along VR columns. These columns are part of the Digital Heritage Route and form an element of the Regio Deal Statia 2026. Equipped with QR codes, the columns are strategically placed at key heritage sites across the island. At the start of the bicycle tour, the King will unveil the first column, officially inaugurating the route.

Breakfast
Following the bicycle tour, the King will proceed to the breakfast location, where he will meet and speak with Statians about daily life on the island.

Fort Amsterdam and Battery Rotterdam
Next, the King and the delegation will proceed to another project of the Regio Deal: Fort Amsterdam and Battery Rotterdam. Here, a memorial site is being established to reflect on the history of slavery. The memorial site is situated on the exact location where thousands of enslaved people were brought ashore. In the centre of Fort Amsterdam once stood a two-story building with long galleries. Enslaved men were imprisoned downstairs, while women were kept upstairs. This location also served as the marketplace for resale to plantations across the wider Caribbean and the Americas. Following abolition, slavery became taboo, and the fort was intentionally neglected to conceal its history. King Willem-Alexander and Prime Minister Rob Jetten will walk across the grounds, receive an explanation of the restoration plans, and converse with members of the Slavery History Commemoration Committee and local youth about the impact of this past on their lives.

Afternoon Programme
Nursing Home / Care Centre
Afterward, King Willem-Alexander will visit a nursing home, where he will be briefed on the status of a newly planned healthcare centre. The goal is to co-locate the nursing home, hospital, pharmacy, Mental Health Care, and the Public Health Department (GGD) under one roof. This centre is also part of the Regio Deal, highlighting the importance of accessible, high-quality healthcare for all residents on the island. The King will also speak with several residents and invited seniors about life on Statia, local traditions, memories, and the changes they have witnessed on the island.

Appeltje van Oranje Winner: Mega-D Youth Foundation
In the afternoon, the King will visit the Mega-D Youth Foundation, a recipient of the Appeltje van Oranje award. This organization ensures that young people on St. Eustatius receive not only meals but also opportunities for personal development. Through after-school programmes, children receive meals, homework assistance, and participate in activities combining play and learning. In doing so, the foundation promotes positive values, healthy lifestyles, and education among youth. King Willem-Alexander will tour the facility and speak with staff members and young participants.

Social Housing
The King’s visit to St. Eustatius will conclude with a walking tour through the Golden Rock neighbourhood, where social housing units are currently undergoing renovation. King Willem-Alexander will walk through the community and speak with residents about living in the neighbourhood and the importance of these renovations.
