‘BES STUDENTEN IN GESPREK MET GEZAGHEBBERS’

Den haag,- Met de titel ‘The Best voor de BES’ organiseerde WeConnect 18 juni in Den Haag een bijeenkomst waar Bonaire, Saba en Sint Eustatius centraal stonden. De eilanden, in de volksmond bekend als BES-eilanden, hebben te maken met tekorten op de arbeidsmarkt. Tegelijkertijd zijn er tientallen BES-studenten en young professionals in Nederland van wie sommigen terug willen. WeConnect bracht deze partijen bij elkaar en liet zo ook een showcase zien van jong talent.

Pitch

De gezaghebbers Alida Francis (Sint Eustatius) en Jonathan Johnson (Saba) waren aanwezig en maakten tijd voor deze ontmoeting tijdens hun drukke werkbezoek aan Nederland. Namens Bonaire was Kabinetssecretaris Rayan Rammo bij de bijeenkomst. Allen hielden een pitch over hun eiland; zo vertelde Alida Francis dat er op Statia 40 vacatures open stonden en eilandskinderen zeer welkom zijn. Ook voor stages is er ruimte, zo bleek bij plannen van de Statiaanse Eliscia om haar stage binnen Internationale Veiligheidskunde op haar geboorteeiland te doen.

Werkervaring

Gezaghebber Jonathan Johnson benadrukte dat jongeren niet te gehaast moesten terugkeren en hun tijd moesten nemen om ervaring buiten het eiland op te doen. “Zorg dat je een goede basis creërt.” Vanuit Bonaire klonk de boodschap: “Laat je niet ontmoedigen door vacatureteksten waarin zoveel jaar ervaring wordt gevraagd. Solliciteer gewoon want zeker als eilandskind ben je van toegevoegde waarde.” Aldus Kabinetssecretaris Rammo. Ook wezen de gezaghebbers op de mogelijkheid om op afstand iets voor de eilanden te betekenen.

Doetank

Tijdens de bijeenkomst presenteerde de doetank ‘It’s in our Nature’ haar adviesrapporten. Daarin deden Caribische studenten voorstellen over hoe de BES eilanden het voortouw kunnen nemen in natuurbehoud via natuurinclusieve oplossingen. Met praktische adviezen zoals het slimmer opvangen van regenwater, een markt met lokale producten of een moestuin voor scholieren. “Het zou goed zijn als de vele natuur-en maatschappelijke organisaties meer samenwerken, ook eilanden breed.” Merkte Dhaishendra op, één van de doetankers. De doetank is een initiatief van WeConnect en het Ministerie van Landbouw, Visserij, Voedselzekerheid en Natuur (LVVN) en bestond uit zo’n 10 Caribische studenten.

Brainstorm
Een gezamenlijke brainstorm leverde mooie inzichten op over hoe de braingain te stimuleren. ‘Wees actief, denk buiten de gebaande paden en deel jouw ideeën, alles is mogelijk.’ En over de toegevoegde waarde van eilandskinderen ‘De wereld verandert snel. Jonge mensen brengen frisse ideeën en nieuwe technieken op de vergrijzende arbeidsmarkt’. Dat vond weerklank bij de gezaghebbers die enthousiast waren om op deze manier direct met de studenten van gedachten te kunnen wisselen.

‘BES STUDENTS IN CONVERSATION WITH ISLAND GOVERNORS’

The hague,- With the title “The Best for the BES”, WeConnect organized a gathering on June 18th in The Hague, putting Bonaire, Saba, and St. Eustatius center stage.

These islands, commonly referred to as the BES islands, are facing labor shortages. At the same time, dozens of BES students and young professionals are living in the Netherlands, some of whom are eager to return. WeConnect brought these groups together, also providing a platform to showcase young talent.

Pitch

Island governors Alida Francis (St. Eustatius) and Jonathan Johnson (Saba) were present and made time for this meeting during their busy work visit to the Netherlands Representing Bonaire, Cabinet Secretary Rayan Rammo attended the event. Each delivered a pitch about their island; Alida Francis shared that there are currently 40 job vacancies on Statia and that island-born youth are more than welcome to return. There are also internship opportunities, as shown by Statian student Eliscia, who plans to do her internship in International Security Studies on her home island.

Work experience

Governor Jonathan Johnson emphasized that young people should not rush back to the islands but take their time to gain experience abroad. “Get a good foundation wherever you may be.” From Bonaire, the message was: “Don’t be discouraged by job postings asking for years of experience. Just apply- especially as someone from the islands-, you bring added value.” Said Cabinet Secretary Rammo. The governors also pointed to ways to contribute to the islands remotely.

Think Tank

During the event, the think tank “It’s in our Nature” presented its advisory reports. In these reports, Caribbean students proposed how the BES islands can take the lead in nature conservation through nature-inclusive solutions. Practical suggestions included smarter rainwater harvesting, a local produce market, and school gardens. “It would be great if the many nature and community organizations worked together more—across the islands as well,” noted Dhaishendra, one of the think tank members. The think tank is an initiative of WeConnect and the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food Security and Nature (LVVN), and consisted of around 10 Caribbean students.

Brainstorm Session

A joint brainstorm session brought valuable insights on how to stimulate braingain. “Be proactive, think outside the box, and share your ideas- anything is possible.” And about the added value of island-born youth: “The world is changing fast. Young people bring fresh ideas and new techniques to an aging labor market.” That resonated with the island governors, who were enthusiastic about engaging directly with students in this way.
