Kralendijk,- Voorstellingen met Caribische muziek en dans zijn populairder dan andere voorstellingen in Caribisch Nederland. Inwoners van Sint-Eustatius bezoeken de bibliotheek relatief vaak voor een bijeenkomst of lezing. Op alle drie de eilanden zijn spelletjes, bijvoorbeeld op de computer of telefoon, de populairste hobby.

54 procent van de inwoners van Bonaire bezocht in 2025 een culturele voorstelling of uitvoering. Op Sint-Eustatius was dit 41 procent en op Saba 26 procent. Ongeveer 2 op de 10 inwoners van Saba en Bonaire zijn in de afgelopen 12 maanden minstens één keer naar de bibliotheek geweest. Op Sint-Eustatius was dit 1 op de 10 inwoners. Dit blijkt uit de nieuwste cijfers van het Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek (CBS).

Helft bibliotheekbezoekers komt om boeken te lenen

Ongeveer de helft van alle mensen die de bibliotheek bezoeken komt er om boeken te lenen: 54 procent van de inwoners van Bonaire en 46 procent van de inwoners van Sint-Eustatius. Op Sint-Eustatius bezoeken vrijwel evenveel mensen de bibliotheek voor een bijeenkomst of lezing als voor het lenen van boeken. Op Bonaire gaat 28 procent naar de bibliotheek voor een bijeenkomst of lezing. Culturele activiteiten en mensen ontmoeten zijn andere redenen om naar de bibliotheek te gaan.

Traditionele of Caribische muziek in combinatie met dans het populairst

Van alle voorstellingen en uitvoeringen was een voorstelling of festival met traditionele of Caribische muziek en dans het populairst op alle eilanden. Van de inwoners van Bonaire, Sint-Eustatius en Saba bezocht respectievelijk 35 procent, 28 procent en 14 procent afgelopen jaar zo’n voorstelling. 12 procent van de inwoners heeft een theatervoorstelling of musical bezocht en tussen de 3 en 18 procent heeft een dansvoorstelling bezocht. Deze voorstellingen kunnen ook buiten het eigen eiland zijn bezocht.

Mensen die niet of niet vaak een concert of andere voorstelling bezochten gaven voornamelijk als reden dat ze het niet leuk vinden. Het aanbod van culturele activiteiten of de prijs ervan speelde bij deze keuze vrijwel geen rol.

Spelletjes populair

70 procent van de inwoners van Bonaire beoefende in de afgelopen 12 maanden een hobby. Op Sint-Eustatius was dat 57 procent, en op Saba 48 procent. Van de genoemde hobby’s waren spelletjes op de telefoon of spelcomputer het populairst, vooral op Bonaire en Saba. Andere hobby’s zoals tekenen, muziek maken, dansen en zingen worden minder vaak beoefend.

Bewoners Saba minst tevreden met cultureel aanbod

Bijna drie kwart van de inwoners van Bonaire zegt tevreden te zijn over het culturele aanbod op het eiland. Op de andere eilanden is dat lager; 50 procent van de inwoners van Sint-Eustatius is tevreden over het aanbod; op Saba is dat 38 procent. Het culturele aanbod op Sint-Eustatius en Saba is ook kleiner dan op Bonaire.

Kralendijk,- Caribbean music and dance are the most popular forms of entertainment in the Caribbean Netherlands. Residents of St Eustatius are more likely than average to visit the library for events or lectures. On all three islands, playing games on a computer or mobile phone is the most popular pastime.

A total of 54 percent of people on Bonaire attended a cultural performance or live event in 2025. On St Eustatius this share was 41 percent and on Saba it was 26 percent. Around 2 in 10 residents of Saba and Bonaire have visited the library at least once in the past twelve months, while on St Eustatius, this was 1 in 10. This is according to newly released figures from Statistics Netherlands (CBS).

Half of library visitors come to borrow books

Around half of people who visited the library in 2025 went there to borrow books: 54 percent of residents on Bonaire and 46 percent of residents on St Eustatius. On St Eustatius, the number of people visiting the library for an event or lecture was almost the same as for those borrowing books. On Bonaire, 28 percent go to the library to attend an event or lecture. Other reasons for visiting the library include cultural activities and to meet people.

Traditional or Caribbean music styles combined with dance are the most popular

Of all shows and performances on the islands, those featuring traditional or Caribbean music and dance were the most popular. Among residents of Bonaire, St Eustatius and Saba went to this type of performance last year, at 35 percent, 28 percent and 14 percent respectively. 12 percent of residents attended a theatre performance or musical, and between 3 and 18 percent attended a dance performance, either on the island or elsewhere.

People who did not attend a concert or other performance, and those who said they were not likely to do so, said that the main reason for this was something they did not like doing. The range of cultural activities on offer or ticket prices were largely irrelevant to this decision.

Games are popular

70 percent of Bonaire’s residents have engaged in a hobby in the past twelve months. On St Eustatius this share was 57 percent and on Saba it was 48 percent. Of the hobbies mentioned, mobile or console games were the most popular, particularly on Bonaire and Saba. Other hobbies such as drawing, composing music, dancing and singing were mentioned less frequently.

Saba residents least satisfied with cultural opportunities on the island

Almost three-quarters of Bonaire’s residents say they are satisfied with the range of cultural activities on the island. On the other islands, the share is lower; 50 percent of St Eustatius’s residents are satisfied, while on Saba, this was 38 percent. The range of cultural activities on offer is more limited on St Eustatius and Saba than on Bonaire.
