HOSPICE KAS FLAMBOYAN INVESTS IN VOLUNTEERS ONCE AGAIN WITH VPTZ NETHERLANDS TRAINING
Kralendijk,-This week, Hospice Kas Flamboyan is once again organizing a special training for its volunteers, in collaboration with VPTZ Netherlands (Voluntary Palliative Terminal Care). Trainer Ruth Elenbaas is on Bonaire to further support the volunteers in their valuable work within palliative care.
Nearly 30 volunteers are taking part in the training. They have been divided into two groups, with each group attending two half-day sessions. Alongside their own work and the shifts they volunteer at the hospice, they are once again making a conscious effort to set aside time to continue learning and developing their skills.
“Our hospice exists thanks to the dedication of our volunteers,” says director Danny Rojer. “They give their time, attention and commitment to our residents and their loved ones. Being able to offer them the opportunity to learn together and continue developing is incredibly valuable.”
This year’s training focuses on Giving and Receiving Feedback. By reflecting together on their daily experiences, volunteers learn to better understand one another, as well as residents and their loved ones. This helps them strengthen each other and be even more attentive and present for the residents.
“By practicing giving and receiving feedback together, we also learn to work better as a team. Ultimately, this helps us to be even more present, to truly ‘Be There’, for our residents and their loved ones,” say coordinators Angelo Goeloe and Mimi Dongen.
Ruth Elenbaas, a trainer with VPTZ Netherlands, is involved in a training on Bonaire for the fourth time. “It is wonderful to once again see such a strong and connected team here. We are grateful that the volunteers at Kas Flamboyan can also participate in the training programs offered in the Netherlands. In this way, we continue to learn together and work on the quality of palliative care.”
The collaboration with VPTZ Netherlands gives Hospice Kas Flamboyan the opportunity to bring knowledge, experiences and developments from the Netherlands to Bonaire. Hospice Kas Flamboyan has been a member of VPTZ Netherlands since 2022.
The strong turnout among the volunteers shows how committed they are to the hospice and to caring for its residents and their loved ones. Alongside their daily commitment, they once again make time to learn, share experiences and strengthen one another.
‘Er Zijn’, Being There, is an important foundation in this work:
being present with attention, compassion and genuine care for people during a vulnerable and deeply meaningful stage of their lives.
