Breaking the Cycle of Poverty Together Poverty is a persistent problem in the Caribbean. Its impact is significant and affects health, opportunities and the ability to participate in society.
One in three people in the Caribbean lives in poverty. Existing poverty policies are often complex or insufficient, meaning people cannot find the support they need. Social initiatives are therefore indispensable in reducing and preventing poverty. They are close to the people, have their trust and offer the support that people need.
For this edition of the Appeltjes van Oranje, the Oranje Fonds is seeking organisations that help break the cycle of poverty and debt in a sustainable way. By this, the Oranje Fonds means organisations that empower people with knowledge and skills. An important criterion in the selection of candidates is that the organisations aim to prevent or reduce poverty.
Ten-day voting period and pitch day
The ten-day voting period runs from 18 May to 27 May. Via the website www.appeltjesvanoranje.nl, anyone can cast a single vote for one of the fifty contenders. The organisation with the most votes will be the first nominee. The remaining nine will be selected following the pitch day in June. Here, they will present themselves to each other and to a jury. The jury has the deciding vote on which organisations are nominated.
Appeltjes van Oranje
Every year, the Oranje Fonds awards three Appeltjes van Oranje to organisations that are committed to fostering a connected society. Initiatives that are indispensable and have been active for at least two years are eligible. The award recognises their work and commitment. The theme changes every year. The award consists of a bronze statuette designed by Princess Beatrix and a cash prize of €25,000. The Queen presents the award.
