DE WENSAMBULANCE MAAKT MENSEN BLIJ.

Kralendijk,- Sinds december 2024 kunnen mensen die in de laatste fase van hun leven zitten, wensen in vervulling laten gaan met de wensambulance.

Ook kan iedereen die om wat voor reden ook immobiel is en geen passend vervoer heeft, gebruik maken van de wensambulance.

Dat vertelden Mimi Dongen en Rosalie de Kreij van de Fundashon Ambulans Deseo Boneiru in een presentatie bij de Rotary Club Bonaire tijdens een lunchbijeenkomst.  

In haar werk als coördinator bij hospice Kas Flamboyan, kon Mimi soms een simpele laatste wens van een terminale bewoner – nog een laatste bezoek aan de geiten bijvoorbeeld, of nog één keer de zee zien – niet in vervulling laten gaan door het ontbreken van passend transport.  Met Rosalie en Ralph de Kreij richtte ze daarom de stichting wensambulance Bonaire op. De Stichting Ambulance Wens in Nederland hielp met kennis en maakte het mogelijk een volledig ingerichte ambulance voor een symbolisch bedrag over te nemen. Het transport naar Bonaire werd gedoneerd en de ook de douane werkte mee.

De vacatures voor vrijwilligers, 22 in totaal, waren snel vervuld. De ambulance kon van start.

Erwin Muller, vroeger een fanatiek windsurfer, was in december 2024 de eerste persoon die in de laatste fase van zijn leven een wens in vervulling zag gaan. De wensambulance bracht hem naar Sorobon, waar hij zelfs nog heeft gezwommen. De stichting maakte er een compleet uitje van waarbij de hele familie werd betrokken. Een donateur maakte het mogelijk dat Billy Valentijn drie weken lang gebruik kon maken van de wensambulance.

Samenwerking met de wensambulances van Curaçao en Aruba komt inmiddels ook van de grond. Hierdoor werd het mogelijk ook een jonge vrouw van Curaçao op Bonaire afscheid te laten nemen van haar schoonfamilie.  Tot nog toe kon de wens van 15 mensen worden vervuld. De stichting wil in 2026 nog veel meer mooie wensen vervullen. Daarvoor wordt gewerkt aan het vergroten van de naamsbekendheid en wordt een structurele fondswerving opgezet.

Na afloop van de bijeenkomst konden de leden van RCB een kijkje nemen in de ambulance, die aan de binnenkant fraai is gedecoreerd door kunstenares Lize van der Ven.

THE WISH AMBULANCE MAKES PEOPLE HAPPY.

Kralendijk,- Since December 2024, people who are in the final stages of their lives can have their wishes fulfilled with the wish ambulance.

Anyone who is immobile for any reason and does not have suitable transportation can also use the wish ambulance.

Mimi Dongen and Rosalie de Kreij of Fundashon Ambulans Deseo Boneiru shared this information in a presentation at the Rotary Club Bonaire during a luncheon meeting.

In her work as coordinator at the Kas Flamboyan hospice, Mimi was sometimes unable to fulfill a simple last wish of a terminal resident—such as one last visit to the goats or seeing the sea one more time—due to the lack of suitable transportation. 

Together with Rosalie and Ralph de Kreij, she therefore founded the Bonaire Wish Ambulance Foundation. The Ambulance Wish Foundation in the Netherlands helped with knowledge and made it possible to acquire a fully equipped ambulance for a symbolic amount. Transport to Bonaire was donated and customs also cooperated.

The vacancies for volunteers, 22 in total, were quickly filled. The ambulance was ready to go.

Erwin Muller, formerly an avid windsurfer, was the first person to have a wish fulfilled in the final phase of his life in December 2024. The wish ambulance took him to Sorobon, where he even went swimming. The foundation made it a complete outing involving the whole family. A donor made it possible for Billy Valentijn to use the wish ambulance for three weeks.

Collaboration with the wish ambulances of Curaçao and Aruba is now also getting off the ground. This made it possible for a young woman from Curaçao to say goodbye to her in-laws on Bonaire. So far, the wishes of 15 people have been fulfilled. The foundation wants to fulfill many more wonderful wishes in 2026. To this end, it is working on increasing brand awareness and setting up a structural fundraising program.

After the meeting, the members of RCB were able to take a look inside the ambulance, which has been beautifully decorated by artist Lize van der Ven.
