LANDMACHTCOMPAGNIE VAN DEFENSIE IN HET CARIBISCH GEBIED ROTEERT
Willemstad – Tijdens een militaire ceremonie op maandagochtend 30 juni 2025 droeg compagnie rotatie 48 haar taken over aan de volgende eenheid, rotatie 49.
De nieuwe commandant, majoor Marco Kamphorst uit Havelte, nam tijdens een traditionele peddeloverdracht het commando over van zijn voorganger, luitenant-kolonel Kjell Koster.
Na vier intensieve maanden in het Caribisch gebied kijkt luitenant-kolonel Koster met trots terug op de samenwerkingen en trainingen van 11 Geniecompagnie.
“Voor de eenheid was het een unieke kans om in dit tropische klimaat te trainen en samen te werken met CZMCARIB en lokale partners. We hebben veel geleerd over het opereren in de uitdagende omstandigheden van het Caribisch gebied. Tijdens onze rotatie hebben we maximaal kunnen werken aan onze genie technische en tactische vaardigheden.
Curacao, Bonaire en Aruba gaven de Geniepelotons de mogelijkheid om een goede basis te leggen voor de algemene militaire vaardigheden, maar ook voor specialistische onderwerpen zoals Airfield Damage Repair, het werken met explosieven en het uitvoeren van genietechnieken in het kader van mobiliteit en contra-mobiliteit.
Naast dat we hebben kunnen werken aan de eigen gereedheid, hebben we ook samengewerkt en getraind met de Curaçaose militairen, eenheden van CZMCARIB en lokale veiligheidspartners. Zo verleende de militairen van de 11 Geniecompagnie bijstand op Sint Maarten naar aanleiding van de brand in de gevangenis.
Dat deden zij in samenwerking met de lokale autoriteiten op Sint Maarten en het Mariniersdetachement op Sint Maarten. Het was bijzonder om te zien hoe we, ondanks verschillen in achtergrond en werkwijzen, gezamenlijk konden bijdragen aan veiligheid en stabiliteit. Deze periode heeft niet alleen ons operationele vermogen versterkt, maar ook de banden met onze partners in het Caribisch gebied.”
Majoor Marco kijkt ernaar uit om de komende 4 maanden met zijn eenheid, 43 Brigade Verkenningseskadron (BVE), te trainen en te werken in het Caribische gebied. De eenheid is versterkt met een genie-verkenningspeloton vanuit 11 Pantsergenie Bataljon en een geneeskundig detachement vanuit 43 Geneeskundige Compagnie. 43 Brigade Verkenningseskadron is multifunctioneel inzetbaar binnen de drie hooftaken van de krijgsmacht, voeren wereldwijd verkennings- en bewakingstaken uit en kunnen middels Groundbase Firesupport vijandelijke High Payoff Targets uitschakelen.
Dit doen zij met grondgebonden verkenningscapaciteit, zowel bereden als te voet, maar maken ook veelvuldig gebruik van onbemande systemen en drones.
Normaal gesproken doen ze dit voor 43 Gemechaniseerde Brigade (Brigade Combat Team) uit Havelte. Nu krijgt het verkenningseskadron de kans en de mogelijkheid hun taken in het Caribische gebied uit te voeren. In de eerste plaats omdat zij unieke capaciteiten en middelen meebrengen die van grote waarde kunnen zijn als hun hulp of bijstand in de regio gevraagd wordt.
In de tweede plaats is het voor hen een unieke kans om te kunnen trainen en experimenteren in het tropische klimaat van het Caribisch gebied. Majoor Marco verwacht dat ze een bijzonder interessante periode tegemoet gaan en hoopt dat we er samen met onze lokale partners een mooie en betekenisvolle tijd van kunnen maken.
De Koninklijke Landmacht heeft een permanente compagnie in het Caribisch gebied. Deze eenheid, onder bevel van CZMCARIB, kan worden ingezet voor een verscheidenheid aan taken. De komende vier maanden traint de compagnie op zowel Aruba, Bonaire als Curaçao.

LAND FORCE COMPANY OF DEFENSE IN THE CARIBBEAN ROTATES
Willemstad – During a military ceremony on Monday morning, June 30, 2025, Company Rotation 48 handed over its tasks to the next unit, Rotation 49. The new commander, Major Marco Kamphorst from Havelte, took over command from his predecessor, Lieutenant Colonel Kjell Koster, during a traditional paddle transfer.
After four intensive months in the Caribbean, Lieutenant Colonel Koster looks back with pride on the collaboration and training of Engineer Company 11. “For the unit it was a unique opportunity to train in this tropical climate and to work together with CZMCARIB and local partners.
We learned a lot about operating in the challenging conditions of the Caribbean. During our rotation we were able to work on our engineering technical and tactical skills to the maximum. Curacao, Bonaire, and Aruba gave the Engineering platoons the opportunity to lay a good foundation for general military skills, but also for specialist subjects such as Airfield Damage Repair, working with explosives and performing engineering techniques in the context of mobility and counter-mobility.
In addition to that we could work on our own readiness, we also worked together and trained with the Curacao military, units of CZMCARIB and local security partners.
For example, the military of the 11th Engineering Company provided assistance on Sint Maarten following the fire in the prison. They did this in cooperation with the local authorities on Sint Maarten and the Marine detachment on Sint Maarten. It was special to see how, despite differences in background and working methods, together we could contribute to security and stability. This period has not only strengthened our operational capability, but also the ties with our partners in the Caribbean.”
Major Marco is looking forward to training and working in the Caribbean area with his unit, Brigade Reconnaissance Squadron 43 (BVE), for the next 4 months. The unit has been reinforced with an engineer reconnaissance platoon from Armored Engineer Battalion 11 and a medical detachment from Medical Company 43.
Brigade Reconnaissance Squadron 43 is multifunctionally deployable within the three main tasks of the armed forces, performs reconnaissance and surveillance tasks worldwide and can eliminate enemy High Payoff Targets by means of Groundbase Firesupport.
They do this with ground-based reconnaissance capacity, both mounted and on foot, but also make frequent use of unmanned systems and drones. Normally they do this for Mechanized Brigade 43 (Brigade Combat Team) from Havelte.
Now the reconnaissance squadron gets the chance and the opportunity to conduct their tasks in the Caribbean area. Firstly, because they bring unique capabilities and resources that can be of great value if their help or assistance is requested in the region. Secondly, it is a unique opportunity for them to be able to train and experiment in the tropical climate of the Caribbean.
Major Marco expects that they will have a remarkably interesting period ahead of them and hopes that we can make it a beautiful and meaningful time together with our local partners.
The Royal Netherlands Army has permanent company in the Caribbean. This unit, under the command of CZMCARIB, can be deployed for a variety of tasks. The company will train in Aruba, Bonaire as well as in Curaçao for the next four months.
