Nagenoeg alle inwoners van Bonaire, Sint Eustatius en Saba hebben toegang tot en maken gebruik van internet. Een meerderheid van de inwoners van de drie eilanden heeft weleens informatie gezien of gelezen die volgens hen niet waar was, of waaraan men twijfelde. Drie kwart van de inwoners heeft online informatie weleens gecontroleerd.

Op Bonaire en Sint-Eustatius hebben vrijwel alle inwoners van 15 jaar of ouder thuis toegang tot internet (97 procent). Op Saba is dit aandeel iets lager (92 procent). Vrijwel iedereen op de eilanden (97 procent) gebruikt dagelijks of bijna dagelijks internet. Dit kan overal zijn, niet alleen thuis, maar bijvoorbeeld ook op het werk. Dit blijkt uit nieuwe cijfers over internetgebruik in Caribisch Nederland van het Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek (CBS).

Van alle inwoners heeft 94 procent in de afgelopen drie maanden via internet gebeld of deed dit via video-bellen, bijvoorbeeld via WhatsApp, Skype, Messenger of MS Teams. Evenveel mensen hebben tekstberichten verstuurd via bijvoorbeeld WhatsApp, Signal, Snapchat of TikTok. 86 procent heeft sociale media gebruikt, zoals Instagram, TikTok of X. De inwoners van Bonaire, Sint-Eustatius en Saba verschillen hierin niet of nauwelijks. 

Op Bonaire en Sint-Eustatius heeft ongeveer 80 procent van de mensen bankzaken via internet geregeld. Op Saba is dit lager, daar heeft ruim 60 procent van de mensen gebankierd via internet. Op Saba zijn er ook minder mensen die e-mails hebben verstuurd of ontvangen dan op de andere twee eilanden. Het online opzoeken van informatie over bijvoorbeeld producten of gezondheid is door ongeveer 2 op de 3 inwoners gedaan.

Meerderheid inwoners twijfelt weleens over waarheid online informatie

Op Bonaire en Saba heeft twee derde van de inwoners in de afgelopen drie maanden weleens informatie gezien of gelezen die volgens hen niet waar was, of waaraan men twijfelde of het wel waar was. Op Sint-Eustatius was dit aandeel lager, daar was dit ruim de helft. Het vaakst twijfelt men over informatie op sociale media. Ruim de helft van de inwoners van Bonaire en Saba had informatie op sociale media gezien waarvan men wist dat het niet waar was, of waaraan men twijfelde. Dat was hoger dan op Sint-Eustatius, daar was dit 40 procent. Op nieuwswebsites en op andere plekken op internet zag men minder vaak informatie waarover men twijfelde. 

Ruim drie kwart inwoners controleert online informatie

Ruim drie kwart heeft weleens gecontroleerd of de informatie op internet waar is. Dit deden ze bijvoorbeeld door de bronnen te controleren, betrouwbare internetbronnen of andere bronnen dan internet te raadplegen, of door de informatie te bespreken met andere mensen. Inwoners van Sint-Eustatius deden dit vaker dan inwoners van Bonaire.
Ongeveer 30 procent van de mensen heeft weleens gecontroleerd of een website veilig is. Bijvoorbeeld door te controleren of het adres begint met https of door te kijken of er een veiligheidslogo aanwezig is. Hierin waren er geen verschillen tussen de inwoners van de drie eilanden.

Almost all residents of Bonaire, St Eustatius and Saba have access to the internet and use it frequently. The majority of residents on the three islands have seen or read information at some point which they believed to be untrue, or which they thought was doubtful. Three-quarters of residents sometimes check the information they find online.

Practically all residents of St Eustatius aged 15 and over have access to the internet at home (97 percent). On Saba, this share was slightly lower at 92 percent. Almost everyone on the islands (97 percent) uses the internet every day or almost every day – either at home or at work. This is according to new figures on internet usage in the Caribbean Netherlands from Statistics Netherlands (CBS).

94 percent of residents said they had made phone calls or video calls online in the past three months, for example using WhatsApp, Skype, Messenger or MS Teams. The same proportion of people had sent text messages using WhatsApp, Signal, Snapchat or TikTok, for example. A total of 86 percent had used social media, such as Instagram, TikTok or X. There was little or no difference in this regard between the residents of Bonaire, St Eustatius and Saba.

Around 80 percent of people on Bonaire and St Eustatius said they had used online banking. On Saba, the share was lower, at just over 60 percent. The number of people on Saba who had sent or received emails was also lower than on the other two islands. Around two in three residents had searched for information online, for example about products or health.

Majority of residents sometimes doubt the accuracy of online information

Two-thirds of residents on Bonaire and Saba said they had seen or read information at some point in the past three months which they believed to be untrue, or of which they doubted the accuracy. On St Eustatius, the share was lower, at just over half. People are the most likely to be sceptical about information they have seen on social media. Just over half of residents of Bonaire and Saba said they had seen information on social media that they knew was untrue, or of which they doubted the accuracy. This share was higher than on St Eustatius, where it was 40 percent. People were less likely to come across information they thought was untrue on news websites and elsewhere on the internet.

Over three-quarters of residents check the information they read online

Over three-quarters of residents check whether the information they read or see on the internet is true. They do this, for example, by checking the sources, consulting reliable online sources or sources other than the internet, or discussing it with others. Residents of St Eustatius are more likely to do this than residents of Bonaire.

Around 30 percent of residents said they had, at some point, checked whether a website was safe – by checking whether the address began with ‘https’ or by looking for a security logo, for example. There were no differences in this regard between residents of the three islands.
