ENGELS:
OVER 70 KANASTERS REMOVED FROM LAC
Kralendijk,- A kanaster is a fish trap used to catch fish in large quantities along the sea floor. Unfortunately, these fish traps can also catch other protected sea life in Lac, such as lobster. When left unchecked, these fish traps also pose a risk for sea turtles.
It is forbidden to place a kanaster without prior approval from our local government via a ‘nature’ permit and the approval from STINAPA, as the management organization of the BNMP. This is stated in art. 10 Island Decree Underwater Park Bonaire (Eilandsbesluit Onderwaterpark Bonaire).
This week, the STINAPA rangers removed over 70 kanasters from Lac Bay, most of which had been placed illegally.
By removing the fish traps, STINAPA is working to ensure that Lac stays a safe place for marine life and is protecting the biodiversity that makes this bay so special.
Legally placed kanasters will be returned to the rightful owners, as STINAPA has a deep respect for protecting sustainably fishing practices on Bonaire.
