PILOTPROJECT VOOR HERINTRODUCTIE KARKÓ IN BAAI VAN CORENDON MANGROVE

WILLEMSTAD – Het Curaçao Sea Aquarium, de Queen Conch Hatchery en Corendon Resorts zijn woensdag officieel gestart met een pilotproject voor de herintroductie van de queen conch (Aliger gigas), lokaal bekend als karkó, in de baai van Corendon Mangrove.

In het kader van dit project zijn woensdag 20 zeeslakken (10 mannelijke en 10 vrouwelijke) uitgezet in het onderwaterrotsgebied bij Corendon Mangrove Bay. Uit voorafgaand onderzoek is gebleken dat dit gebied een uitstekende voedingsbodem en leefomgeving biedt voor de zeeslakken. Er worden in het gebied al eerder exemplaren waargenomen die er hun natuurlijke habitat hebben gevonden.

Het doel van de pilot door Curaçao Sea Aquarium en de Queen Conch Hatchery is om te onderzoeken of de uitgezette dieren zich ook op die locatie succesvol kunnen voortplanten. “Corendon Resorts werkt graag aan het project mee. Verduurzaming en het beschermen van de natuur op Curaçao staan bij ons hoog in het vaandel en met de samenwerking met het Curaçao Seaquarium en de Queen Conch Hachery hebben wij een prachtige samenwerking gerealiseerd”, zo verklaard Biray Ogut, algemeen directeur van Corendon Hotels.

De vooruitzichten zijn volgens de betrokken wetenschappers veelbelovend. De wetenschappers zullen de ontwikkeling en voortgang van de populatie nauwgezet monitoren door middel van periodiek veldonderzoek en door wekelijkse observaties gedurende het van juli tot november durende broedseizoen van de karkó.

De karkó is een grote zeeschelp van zeeslakken uit de familie Strombidae. De soort komt veel voor in het Caribisch gebied, maar wordt in toenemende mate bedreigd door overbevissing en verlies van leefgebied. Met dit initiatief willen de betrokken partijen bijdragen aan het herstel en de bescherming van deze iconische soort.

PILOT PROJECT FOR QUEEN CONCH REINTRODUCTION IN CORENDON MANGROVE BAY

WILLEMSTAD – The Curaçao Sea Aquarium, the Queen Conch Hatchery, and Corendon Resorts officially launched a pilot project on Wednesday for the reintroduction of the queen conch (Aliger gigas), locally known as karkó, in Corendon Mangrove Bay.

As part of this project, 20 sea snails (10 male and 10 female) were released on Wednesday into the underwater rocky area of Corendon Mangrove Bay. Prior research has shown that this location offers an excellent feeding ground and habitat for the conch.

Specimens were observed in the past in the bay, having made it their natural habitat. The aim of the pilot, initiated by the Curaçao Sea Aquarium and the Queen Conch Hatchery, is to study whether the released animals can successfully reproduce. “Corendon Resorts is pleased to participate in this project. Sustainability and the protection of nature on Curaçao are of great importance to us, and through our collaboration with the Curaçao Seaquarium and the Queen Conch Hatchery, we have established a wonderful partnership,” stated Biray Ogut, Managing Director of Corendon Hotels.

According to the scientists involved, the outlook is highly promising. The scientists will closely monitor the development and progress of the population through periodic field research and weekly observations during the queen conch’s breeding season, which lasts from July to November.

The conch is a large seashell from the family Strombidae. The species is common in the Caribbean but is increasingly threatened by overfishing and habitat loss. With this initiative, the partners aim to contribute to the recovery and protection of this iconic species.
