DEFENSIE VERSTERKT MONITORING VAN VEILIGHEID RONDOM HET CARIBISCH DEEL VAN HET KONINKRIJK 

Defensie heeft nu de permanente taak om de veiligheidssituatie rond het Caribisch deel van het Koninkrijk continu te monitoren. Hiermee versterkt Nederland haar informatiepositie in de regio. Dat maakt het mogelijk om op tijd te anticiperen op geopolitieke en destabiliserende ontwikkelingen. Dat maakt het kabinet vandaag bekend.

De veiligheidssituatie in het Caribisch gebied is complexer als gevolg van toenemende geopolitieke spanningen. Om een actueel omgevingsbeeld te behouden, is het toezicht houden op dreigingen in de regio belangrijk.  

Betere beeldopbouw

Sinds september vorig jaar monitort de krijgsmacht ontwikkelingen in het gebied al met een tijdelijk mandaat. De behoefte aan doorlopende aanvullende informatie over de Caribische Zee en de activiteiten van zowel statelijke als niet-statelijke actoren is echter groot.  

Defensie heeft nu de opdracht om ontwikkelingen in alle domeinen te volgen, voor zover deze van invloed kunnen zijn op het Caribisch deel van het Koninkrijk. Hierdoor kan de krijgsmacht dreigingen sneller onderkennen en duiden. 

Een voorbeeld hiervan is het volgen van veranderingen in de militaire aanwezigheid en activiteiten van andere landen in de regio. Door deze ontwikkelingen structureel te monitoren, kan Defensie veranderingen tijdig signaleren.  

Structurele uitvoering

De taak wordt geïntegreerd in de bestaande gereedstellingsopdrachten van de krijgsmacht. Hiermee draagt Defensie structureel bij aan de bescherming van de belangen van het Koninkrijk.  

Defensie is al permanent met personeel en materieel van de verschillende krijgsmachtdelen aanwezig in het Caribisch deel van het Koninkrijk. Hiermee draagt Defensie bij aan de bescherming van de integriteit van het grondgebied van het Caribisch deel van het Koninkrijk, de handhaving en bevordering van de internationale rechtsorde en het verlenen van bijstand aan civiele autoriteiten.

MINISTRY OF DEFENCE STRENGTHENS SECURITY MONITORING AROUND THE CARIBBEAN PART OF THE KINGDOM

 The Ministry of Defence has been assigned a permanent task to continuously monitor the security situation surrounding the Caribbean part of the Kingdom. This strengthens the Netherlands’ information position in the region. This enables timely anticipation of geopolitical and destabilizing developments. The cabinet announced this today.

The security situation in the Caribbean has become more complex due to rising geopolitical tensions. To maintain an up-to-date situational awareness, it is important to monitor threats in the region.

Improved situational awareness

Since September of last year, the armed forces have been monitoring developments in the area under a temporary mandate. However, there is a significant need for continuous, additional information regarding the Caribbean Sea and the activities of both state and non-state actors.

The Ministry of Defence is now tasked with tracking developments across all domains as far as these could potentially impact the Caribbean part of the Kingdom. This will allow the armed forces to identify and interpret threats more rapidly.

One example of this is tracking changes in the military presence and activities of other nations in the region. By monitoring these developments on a structural basis, the Ministry of Defence can detect changes in a timely manner.

Structural implementation

This task is being integrated into the armed forces’ existing operational readiness mandates. Through this, the Ministry of Defence makes a structural contribution to protecting the interests of the Kingdom.

The Ministry of Defence already maintains a permanent presence in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom,  with personnel and equipment drawn from its various branches. In this way, the Ministry of Defence contributes to protecting the integrity of the territory of the Caribbean part of the Kingdom, upholding and promoting the international legal order, and providing assistance to civil authorities.
