GOEDE DOEL VEILING BIJ SOBREMESA KAS DI ARTE OP 16 MEI

Kralendijk,- Op zaterdag 16 mei worden vanaf 5 uur ’s-middags  33 kunstwerken geveild die voor het goede doel geschonken zijn door lokale kunstenaars. De kunstwerken zijn van 5 tot 16 mei te bezichtingen bij Sobremesa Art Centre & Gallery aan de J.A. Abrahamboulevard # 10.

Afgelopen woensdag hield oud-advocaat Michiel Bijkerk een vurig betoog bij de Rotary Club Bonaire). Hij riep de leden op om met een goed gevulde portemonnee naar de veiling Art and Justice te komen. De opbrengst gaat namelijk naar een stichting die hem na aan het hart staat: de “Golden Meand Society”. Deze stichting richt zich op het subsidiëren van rechtszaken die een waardig principieel doel dienen. Voorbeelden zijn de rechtszaken om het minimumloon gelijk te trekken aan dat van Europees Nederland en de rechtszaak om OLB te dwingen om bouwgrond in erfpacht uit te geven aan Bonairianen die het nodig hebben om een eigen huis te bouwen. Beide rechtszaken zijn weliswaar verloren – recht is soms iets kroms dat gebogen is – maar volgens Bijkerk is de principiële strijd voor rechtvaardigheid uiteindelijk minstens net zo belangrijk als het resultaat. Ook bij een kleine kans op winst, bij principiële zaken is de winstkans tussen 20 en 30 procent zegt Bijkerk, is het middel (de ‘means’) nog steeds de moeite waard. Het brengt het doel in beeld (de ‘end’ in combinatie met means volgt het nieuwe woord ‘meand’) en er is een goede kans dat het principe later weer wordt opgepakt.

De Golden Meand Society subsidieert geen civiele zaken, alleen strafzaken en administratieve zaken voor mensen die geen advocaat kunnen betalen en op geen andere manier financiering voor hun principiële zaak kunnen krijgen. De middelen van de stichting zijn echter beperkt. Daarom hoopt Bijkerk met de kunstveiling voldoende geld bij elkaar te krijgen voor 3 tot 5 rechtszaken.

Er is bij de Rotary Club Bonaire veel sympathie voor dit mooie doel. De oproep van Bijkerk om op 16 mei naar de veiling te komen, valt in goede aarde. De club roept iedereen op om te komen. Het belooft een mooie veiling te worden.

CHARITY AUCTION AT SOBREMESA ART CENTRE ON MAY 16

Kralendijk,- On Saturday, May 16, starting at 5:00 p.m., 33 works of art donated to charity by local artists will be auctioned off. The artworks will be on display from May 5 through May 16 at Sobremesa Art Centre & Gallery, located at 10 J.A. Abrahamboulevard.

Last Wednesday, former attorney Michiel Bijkerk delivered a passionate speech at the Rotary Club of Bonaire. He urged members to come to the Art and Justice auction with their wallets well-stocked. The proceeds will go to a foundation close to his heart: the “Golden Meand Society.” This foundation focuses on subsidizing lawsuits that serve a worthy, principled cause. Examples include the lawsuits to bring the minimum wage in line with that of the European Netherlands and the lawsuit to compel OLB to grant building land on a long-term lease to Bonaireans who need it to build their own homes. Although both lawsuits were lost—the law is sometimes bent in a strange way—Bijkerk believes that the principled fight for justice is ultimately just as important as the outcome. Even with a small chance of winning—in matters of principle, the chance of winning is between 20 and 30 percent, says Bijkerk—the means are still worth the effort. It brings the end into focus (the “end” in combination with “means” forms the new word “meand”), and there is a good chance that the principle will be taken up again later.

The Golden Meand Society does not fund civil cases; it only supports criminal and administrative cases for people who cannot afford a lawyer and have no other way to secure funding for their high-profile cases. However, the foundation’s resources are limited. That is why Bijkerk hopes the art auction will raise enough money to fund 3 to 5 lawsuits.

There is a great deal of support for this worthy cause at the Rotary Club of Bonaire. Bijkerk’s call to attend the auction on May 16 has been well received. The club is encouraging everyone to come. It promises to be a wonderful auction.
