Toekomst van toerisme op Bonaire vraagt om gerichte keuzes

Kralendijk,– De Bonaire Hotel and Tourism Association (BONHATA) heeft de resultaten gepresenteerd van een uitgebreid onderzoek naar de impact van toerisme op het eiland. De studie, uitgevoerd door het Economisch Bureau Amsterdam (EBA), laat zien hoe belangrijk toerisme is voor de economie van Bonaire, maar waarschuwt ook voor de risico’s van onbeheersbare groei.

Tijdens een ontbijtsessie voor de leden van BONHATA presenteerde EBA het rapport.Toerisme blijkt veruit de grootste economische motor van het eiland. De sector is goed voor ongeveer 50 procent van het bruto binnenlands product, meer dan de helft van alle banen, en 44 procent van de inkomsten uit lokale belastingen. Tegelijkertijd veroorzaakt te snelle of ongecontroleerde groei problemen, zoals toenemende druk op de natuur, de infrastructuur en de woningmarkt.

“Deze studie bevestigt wat wij als BONHATA al lange tijd signaleren,” zegt Veroesjka de Windt, CEO van BONHATA. “Toerisme is van levensbelang voor Bonaire, maar moet hand in hand gaan met bescherming van onze natuur, cultuur en leefomgeving. De tijd van vrijblijvende groei is voorbij; het is tijd voor gerichte keuzes.”

Volgens de onderzoekers is duurzame economische groei mogelijk door een gerichte toename van het aantal toeristen. Door te focussen op toeristen met een hoger bestedingsniveau en beter in te spelen op markten zoals Noord-Amerika, kan de sector meer waarde genereren met relatief minder druk op natuur en infrastructuur. BONHATA pleit daarom voor een kwalitatieve groeistrategie, waarbij wordt toegewerkt naar een bezettingsgraad van 70% met toeristen die meer besteden en beter passen bij het duurzame karakter van Bonaire.

De zorgen van de bevolking worden serieus genomen, benadrukt BONHATA. Veel inwoners erkennen het belang van toerisme, maar maken zich onder andere zorgen over woningtekorten, verkeersdrukte en verlies van identiteit. BONHATA wil de komende periode daarom actief in gesprek met bewoners en andere betrokkenen om samen te bouwen aan een breed gedragen, duurzame toerismestrategie.

“Wij nemen onze verantwoordelijkheid als sectorvertegenwoordiger serieus,” aldus De Windt. “We willen in nauwe afstemming met overheid, bedrijven, bewoners en maatschappelijke organisaties richting geven aan een toekomst waarin toerisme blijft bijdragen aan welvaart, zónder dat het ten koste gaat van de dingen die Bonaire uniek maken.”

BONHATA PRESENTS RESULTS OF LARGE-SCALE TOURISM IMPACT STUDY BONAIRE

Future of tourism on Bonaire requires targeted choices.

Kralendijk,- The Bonaire Hotel and Tourism Association (BONHATA) has presented the results of a comprehensive study on the impact of tourism on the island. The study, conducted by the Economic Bureau Amsterdam (EBA), highlights the importance of tourism for Bonaire’s economy, while also warning of the risks associated with uncontrolled growth.

During a breakfast session for BONHATA members, EBA presented the report. Tourism turns out to be by far the most significant economic driver of the island. The sector accounts for approximately 50 percent of the gross domestic product, more than half of all jobs, and 44 percent of local tax revenues. At the same time, rapid or uncontrolled growth brings problems such as increasing pressure on nature, infrastructure, and the housing market.

“This study confirms what we at BONHATA have been observing for some time,” says Veroesjka de Windt, CEO of BONHATA. “Tourism is vital for Bonaire, but it must go hand in hand with the protection of our nature, culture, and living environment. The time for unrestrained growth is over; now is the time for targeted choices.”

According to the researchers, sustainable economic growth is possible through a targeted increase in tourist numbers. By focusing on tourists with higher spending power and better responding to markets such as North America, the sector can generate more value with relatively less pressure on nature and infrastructure. BONHATA therefore advocates for a qualitative growth strategy, aiming for a 70% occupancy rate with tourists who spend more and are better aligned with Bonaire’s sustainable character.

The concerns of the local population are being taken seriously, BONHATA emphasizes. While many residents recognize the importance of tourism, they also express concerns about housing shortages, traffic congestion, and loss of identity. BONHATA intends to actively engage with residents and other stakeholders in the coming period to collaboratively develop a widely supported, sustainable tourism strategy.

“We take our responsibility as a sector representative seriously,” says De Windt. “We want to work in close coordination with government, businesses, residents, and civil society organizations to shape a future in which tourism continues to contribute to prosperity—without compromising the very things that make Bonaire unique.”
