MINISTERRAAD BENOEMT JONATHAN JOHNSON TOT WAARNEMEND RIJKSVERTEGENWOORDIGER

De ministerraad heeft ingestemd met de voordracht tot benoeming van de heer Jonathan Johnson als waarnemend Rijksvertegenwoordiger van de openbare lichamen Bonaire, Sint Eustatius en Saba. De heer Johnson volgt hiermee Jan Helmond op die deze functie sinds november 2017 bekleedde. De benoeming gaat in per 1 januari 2027 en wordt bij Koninklijk Besluit geformaliseerd.

De heer Johnson (50) is geboren op Saba en was van 2008 tot 2026 Gezaghebber van Saba. In deze functie was hij verantwoordelijk voor onder meer de openbare orde en veiligheid, crisisbeheersing, de kwaliteit van het openbaar bestuur en de vertegenwoordiging van Saba. Daarvoor was hij onder meer directeur van de middelbare school op Saba. Daarnaast bekleedde de heer Johnson diverse maatschappelijke functies. 

De heer Johnson wordt benoemd als waarnemend Rijksvertegenwoordiger, omdat de Wet openbare lichamen Bonaire, Sint Eustatius en Saba (WolBES) momenteel wordt herzien. In het voorstel voor de Herzieningswet WolBES staat dat het ambt van Rijksvertegenwoordiger behouden blijft, maar anders wordt ingericht. Met de benoeming van een waarnemend Rijksvertegenwoordiger wordt gezorgd voor continuïteit van het ambt gedurende deze periode.

De (waarnemend) Rijksvertegenwoordiger vervult een verbindende rol tussen het Rijk en de openbare lichamen en heeft onder meer taken op het gebied van goed bestuur en interbestuurlijk toezicht.

COUNCIL OF MINISTERS APPOINTED JONATHAN JOHNSON AS ACTING KINGDOM REPRESENTATIVE

The Council of Ministers has approved the nomination for the appointment of Mr. Jonathan Johnson as Acting Kingdom Representative of the public entities Bonaire, St. Eustatius and Saba. Mr. Johnson hereby succeeds Jan Helmond, who had held this position since November 2017. The appointment takes effect on the 1st of January 2027 and will be formalized by Royal Decree.

Mr. Johnson (50) was born in Saba and was the Island Governor of Saba between 2008 and 2026. In this, he was responsible for, among other things, public order and safety, crisis management, the quality of public administration and representing Saba. In addition, Mr. Johnson held various positions in civil society.

Mr. Johnson is being appointed as Acting Kingdom Representative because the ‘Wet openbare lichamen Bonaire, Sint Eustatius en Saba (WolBES)’ is currently under revision. The proposed legislation for the ‘Herzieningswet WolBES’ states that the office of Kingdom Representative will be retained but will be structured differently. The appointment of an Acting Kingdom Representative ensures the continuity of the office during this period.

The (Acting) Kingdom Representative serves as a link between the Kingdom and the public entities and has responsibilities including good governance and intergovernmental supervision.
