FIFTH OPEN LETTER TO THE ISLAND COUNCIL FOR PAPIAMENTU TEXT SCROLL DOWN

Kralendijk,- We have asked the Island Council to publicly condemn the Russian invasion in Ukraine and specifically also to declare that Bonaire supports Holland in this matter. The Council has rejected this petition by remaining silent. The words of Martin Luther King ring out loud:
‘In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends’.

Your error can still be amended, but we will not harass you anymore. You, the Council, has to see the light. If not, we will all simply have to remain in the dark. If you should wish to understand better, we suggest you follow our fellow-Aruban Prime Minister Mike Eman’s approach. In short, we should not always only ask Holland to give us more money. The money and support from Holland is important. But when Holland has to make hard decisions, we must show solidarity. We don’t know what will happen with Venezuela. But, if there should be serious trouble for our islands, the only one we can rely on is the Dutch Military. It is of vital importance that our islands show appreciation for that.

There is still ample opportunity to do so.

In the meantime, we suggest everyone who agrees with the basic message of our series of Open Letters to the Island Council to start donating to the following foundation:

Nobody has contacted us to help set up a committee. Therefore, we will proceed on our own. We have already donated. Peace for Ukraine! And we support Holland in its general policy towards Ukraine. It is about the preservation of human rights, democracy, fair and free elections and an impartial and independent judiciary. We are very aware that these values are all still very underdeveloped. But what we do have, we shouldn’t lose.

Russia’s autocracy must be halted.

We in Bonaire cannot do much. But we can do something.
