UNIVERSITEIT LEIDEN START VERVOLGONDERZOEK NAAR SEKSUELE GEZONDHEID EN INTIEME RELATIES IN CARIBISCH NEDERLAND
Leiden,- In de week van 16 februari 2026 zijn Professor Ton Liefaard en Professor Judi Mesman van de Universiteit Leiden op Bonaire, Sint Eustatius en Saba geweest.
Daar hebben ze gesprekken gevoerd met inwoners, jongeren (van 16 jaar en ouder) en professionals. Dit was om input te verzamelen voor een nieuw onderzoek: Seksuele gezondheid en intieme relaties in Caribisch Nederland.
Dit onderzoek wordt uitgevoerd in opdracht van het ministerie van Volksgezondheid, Welzijn en Sport (VWS). Uit de eerste gesprekken blijkt dat er veel animo is om mee te denken over de vragen voor de enquête, de behoeftes en belangrijke thema’s.
Dit vervolgonderzoek bouwt voort op een eerder onderzoek uit 2024. Dat onderzoek werd gedaan door de Universiteit Leiden, samen met de Universiteit van Curaçao en UNICEF, ook in opdracht van VWS. Uit dat onderzoek kwamen diverse resultaten naar voren. Zo bleek de kracht van de hechte gemeenschappen op de eilanden. Maar er waren ook zorgen, zoals de onvoldoende bescherming van kinderen tegen seksueel geweld.
In april 2026 wordt er een vragenlijst verspreid waar iedereen aan mee kan doen. Ook worden er verdiepende interviews gehouden. Deelname aan de vragenlijst en de interviews is volledig anoniem. Zo kan iedereen veilig en open hun mening geven. De resultaten helpen om beleid te maken dat beter past bij de behoeften van de inwoners.

LEIDEN UNIVERSITY IS STARTING FOLLOW-UP RESEARCH INTO SEXUAL HEALTH AND INTIMATE RELATIONSHIPS IN THE CARIBBEAN NETHERLANDS
Leiden,- Professor Ton Liefaard and Professor Judi Mesman from Leiden University visited Bonaire, St. Eustatius and Saba in the week of 16 February 2026.
During their visit they spoke to residents, young people (ages 16 and above) and professionals in order to collect input for new research into sexual health and intimate relationships in the Caribbean Netherlands. The research in question is being commissioned by the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport (Ministerie van Volksgezondheid, Welzijn en Sport, VWS). It became apparent from the initial discussions that people are very enthusiastic about sharing ideas on the research questions, needs and key themes.
This follow-up research builds on previous research carried out in 2024 by Leiden University in collaboration with the University of Curaçao and UNICEF, which was also commissioned by VWS. That research produced a variety of results. One of the things it highlighted is the strength of the close communities on the islands. However, it also revealed concerns, for example relating to the inadequate protection of children against sexual violence.
A questionnaire for everyone to complete is going to be distributed in April 2026. More in-depth interviews are also going to be conducted. People can complete the questionnaire and take part in the interviews on an entirely anonymous basis. This means that everyone will be able to express their views safely and freely. The outcomes will help create policy which aligns more effectively with residents’ needs.
