CARIBISCHE LANDEN VERENIGD OM FINANCIERING VAN MARIENE BESCHERMING TE BEVORDEREN TIJDENS WORKSHOP OP CURAÇAO

Willemstad,- Eerder deze maand kwamen leiders op het gebied van mariene bescherming uit het hele Caribische gebied bijeen op Curaçao voor een intensieve workshop gericht op duurzame financieringsoplossingen voor beschermde gebieden.

Het 3-daagse evenement, gezamenlijk georganiseerd door Blue Marine Foundation, Blue Nature Alliance en de Dutch Caribbean Nature Alliance (DCNA), bracht mariene parkbeheerders en natuurbeschermingsdeskundigen uit tien Caribische eilanden bijeen.

Vertegenwoordigers van alle zes Nederlands-Caribische eilanden namen deel naast afgevaardigden van St. Vincent en de Grenadines, Barbados, de Dominicaanse Republiek en St. Kitts & Nevis.

De workshop bestond uit gezamenlijke sessies, presentaties van experts en strategische planning om de kritieke financieringsuitdagingen voor mariene beschermingsinspanningen in de hele regio aan te pakken.

Deelnemers kregen inzicht in verschillende financieringsmechanismen, op basis van regionale en mondiale casestudies die als voorbeeld dienen voor de unieke mariene ecosystemen van het Caribisch gebied. Door zich te richten op kansen en samenwerking, liet de workshop zien hoe bewuste verschuivingen een domino-effect kunnen hebben op de inspanningen voor natuurbehoud.

“Het was zo’n bemoedigende bijeenkomst,” zei Clare Brook, CEO van Blue Marine.

“Tien Caribische eilanden zijn bij elkaar gekomen om uitdagingen en zorgen te delen, met name ernstige tekorten aan financiering en capaciteit voor vitaal natuurbeschermingswerk in de regio. We zijn tot een aantal creatieve, innovatieve oplossingen gekomen die het potentieel hebben om zinvolle financiering voor mariene bescherming naar de regio te sluizen. In onze gezamenlijke inspanning om in 2030, 30% van de oceaan te beschermen, wordt de Caribische Zee de ‘Zee van Hoop!

Het “30 by 30”-initiatief vertegenwoordigt een wereldwijde toezegging om in 2030 ten minste 30% van de oceanen in de wereld te beschermen.

Dit ambitieuze doel is erop gericht om de mariene biodiversiteit te beschermen, de veerkracht van ecosystemen tegen klimaatverandering te vergroten en duurzame middelen van bestaan voor kustgemeenschappen veilig te stellen. “Betekenisvolle verandering gebeurt wanneer we luisteren, samenwerken en ons richten op de mensen die deze gebieden het beste kennen.

Bij de Blue Nature Alliance geloven we dat financiering voor natuurbescherming een cruciale factor is, die eiland gestuurde prioriteiten moet ondersteunen en regionale oplossingen moet opschalen. De keuzes die we nu maken, zijn van belang, voor de oceaan en voor elke gemeenschap die ervan afhankelijk is,” zei Sarah Elsaid, Regionaal Leider, Blue Nature Alliance.

“De Dutch Caribbean Nature Alliance is ervan overtuigd dat regionale samenwerking de hoeksteen is van duurzame financiering voor natuurbehoud”, zegt Arno Verhoeven, directeur van DCNA.

“Deze workshop heeft cruciale inzichten opgeleverd in de verschillende natuurbeschermingsstrategieën die op de Caribische eilanden worden geïmplementeerd. Door onze inspanningen op elkaar af te stemmen, hebben we een belangrijke eerste stap gezet in de richting van de ontwikkeling van robuustere financieringsmechanismen. Ons gedeelde mariene ecosysteem vraagt om gedeelde oplossingen.”

De workshop bood de deelnemende landen een waardevolle gelegenheid om ervaringen uit te wisselen, successen op het gebied van natuurbehoud te vieren en samen strategieën te ontwikkelen om gezamenlijke uitdagingen aan te gaan.

De deelnemers vertrokken met uitvoerbare plannen om duurzame financieringsmechanismen te implementeren die zijn afgestemd op hun specifieke ecologische en economische context.

CARIBBEAN NATIONS UNITE TO ADVANCE MARINE CONSERVATION FINANCING AT CURAÇAO WORKSHOP

Willemstad,- Earlier this month, marine conservation leaders from across the Caribbean gathered in Curaçao for an intensive workshop focused on sustainable finance solutions for protected areas. The 3-day event, jointly organized by Blue Marine Foundation, Blue Nature Alliance, and the Dutch Caribbean Nature Alliance (DCNA), brought together marine park managers and conservation professionals from ten Caribbean islands.

Representatives from all six Dutch Caribbean islands participated alongside delegates from St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Barbados, the Dominican Republic and St. Kitts & Nevis. The workshop featured collaborative sessions, expert presentations, and strategic planning to address the critical funding challenges facing marine conservation efforts throughout the region.

Participants received insights on diverse financing mechanisms, drawing from regional and global case studies that serve as templates for the Caribbean’s unique marine ecosystems. By focusing on opportunities and collaboration, the workshop exemplified how intentional shifts can create ripple effects in conservation efforts.

The “30 by 30” initiative represents a global commitment to protect at least 30% of the world’s ocean by 2030. This ambitious target aims to safeguard marine biodiversity, enhance ecosystem resilience against climate change, and secure sustainable livelihoods for coastal communities.
