FOOD BANK SEEKS SUPPORT FROM LOCAL BUSINESSES

Kralendijk,- More than 350 households on Bonaire rely on food packages from the Bonaire Food Bank Foundation. To ensure funding for the monthly food packages, the food bank has launched the business-focused “Support a Family” project. For $990 per year, your company can sponsor a monthly food package for a vulnerable family for a full year.  

Maarten Caljouw, chairman of the foundation’s board, recently shared this information at a luncheon hosted by the Rotary Club of Bonaire. The food packages are tailored to the family’s composition. In addition to non-perishable canned goods, household items such as laundry detergent, juices, fresh eggs, and fresh bread, fresh vegetables from Venezuela are also purchased monthly to include in the packages. The items are purchased as cost-effectively as possible. Some companies allow purchases at cost. Companies also make regular donations. For families with young children, the packages include diapers and baby food, which are sponsored by the Mormons. At the start of the school year, the food bank also provides “back-to-school” packages, and there are extras at Christmas.

Caljouw explains that there are currently 354 households registered with the food bank. The composition of the households, totaling 1,400 people, is known. Families are referred through organizations such as probation services or by people in the neighborhood. Akseso makes the final selection. Akseso coordinates with Adra, the other food bank, to prevent misuse. A minimum of $361,000 is needed annually just to cover the cost of the food packages.

A charitable campaign by a well-known Dutch DJ raised a one-time amount of €130,000 in 2025. Starting in 2025, the Food Bank will receive €300,000 from the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations. The remaining amount comes from donations from individuals and businesses. The Bonaire Food Bank Foundation has been granted ANBI status (Public Benefit Organization) by the Tax Authority.

The packages are packed by a core group of 8 volunteers, assisted by a pool of 60 other volunteers. The Royal Netherlands Marechaussee, the Police, and young people from Bonaire Breakers make up a significant portion of this pool.

The food bank has launched the “Support a Family” project to generate more income on a structural basis. The Rotary Club of Bonaire wholeheartedly supports this project. The Rotary Club will sponsor food packages for one family and is considering supporting a second family. The Rotary Club is calling on Bonaire business owners to also sponsor a year’s worth of food packages for a family. Sponsoring two or more families is, of course, also welcome.
