KLIMAATTAFEL BONAIRE NEEMT HET VOORTOUW TEGEN KLIMAATVERANDERING

Kralendijk –  Het Bestuurscollege van Bonaire neemt met de oprichting van de Klimaattafel Bonaire een belangrijke stap in de strijd tegen de impact van klimaatverandering.

Bonaire ervaart steeds duidelijker de gevolgen van extreme weersomstandigheden zoals hevige regenval, lange periodes van droogte, hittegolven en stijgende zeewatertemperaturen. Deze veranderingen hebben niet alleen invloed op de mensen, maar bedreigen ook de unieke natuur van het eiland, waaronder koraalriffen en zeedieren.

Met de aanstelling van een ervaren en betrokken voorzitter wordt direct duidelijk hoe serieus het eiland de uitdaging van klimaatverandering neemt. De voorzitter, de heer Reynolds ‘Nolly’ Oleana, is gevraagd vanwege zijn diepgaande kennis van zowel de lokale gemeenschap als de unieke natuur van Bonaire. Zijn leiderschap en ervaring zijn van onschatbare waarde om de diverse partijen aan tafel te verenigen en een duurzame koers uit te zetten.

Onder leiding van de voorzitter gaat een projectgroep, bestaande uit vertegenwoordigers van het Openbaar Lichaam Bonaire, de Rijksoverheid en lokale bureaus, samen met de gemeenschap een route uitstippelen om de concrete stappen te bepalen die moeten leiden tot een zogeheten klimaatplan voor Bonaire. Het is van cruciaal belang om een breed gedragen klimaatplan te ontwikkelen dat zowel de mens als de natuur op Bonaire beschermt en dat we het eiland behouden voor onze kinderen en de generatie daarna.

“De urgentie is duidelijk,” stellen het Bestuurscollege en de voorzitter van de Klimaattafel. “Klimaatverandering raakt ons hele ecosysteem en levensonderhoud. Alleen door nu in actie te komen, kunnen we een leefbaar Bonaire behouden.” De gesprekken binnen de Klimaattafel geven ruimte voor dialoog tussen burgers, bedrijven en belanghebbenden. Samen werken we aan een aanpak die Bonaire weerbaarder maakt.

Deze dialoog werd verder aangewakkerd tijdens de townhall meeting op 18 december, waarin Gedeputeerde A. Cicilia het belang van de Klimaattafel Bonaire toelichtte. De voorzitter van de Klimaattafel introduceerde de projectgroep en presenteerde het plan van aanpak, waarin werd uitgelegd hoe we samen tot een klimaatplan kunnen komen voor een leefbaar Bonaire. De bijeenkomst bood ook ruimte voor vragen en het delen van ideeën.

De gesprekken vinden plaats in het eerste en tweede kwartaal van 2025, waarna concrete plannen en afspraken worden vastgelegd in een Klimaatintentie en uiteindelijk begin 2026 in een Klimaatplan.

Dit proces geeft de gemeenschap van Bonaire de kans om mee te denken over de toekomst van hun eiland.

Met de Klimaattafel Bonaire onderstreept het Bestuurscollege haar betrokkenheid bij een duurzame toekomst, waarin het welzijn van mens en natuur voorop staan.

KLIMAATTAFEL BONAIRE TAKES THE LEAD IN THE FIGHT AGAINST CLIMATE CHANGE

Kralendijk – The Executive Council of Bonaire is taking an important step in the fight against the impacts of climate change with the establishment of the Klimaattafel Bonaire.

Bonaire is increasingly experiencing the effects of extreme weather events such as heavy rainfall, prolonged periods of drought, heatwaves, and rising sea temperatures.

These changes not only affect the people, but also threaten the unique nature of the island, including coral reefs and marine life.

With the appointment of an experienced and committed chairperson, it is immediately clear how seriously the island is addressing the challenge of climate change. The chairperson, Mr. Reynolds ‘Nolly’ Oleana, was chosen for his deep knowledge of both the local community and the unique nature of Bonaire. His leadership and experience are invaluable in bringing together diverse parties and charting a sustainable course.

Under the leadership of the chairperson, a project group, consisting of representatives from the Public Entity of Bonaire, the Dutch Government, and local agencies, will work together with the community to outline the concrete steps needed to create a climate plan for Bonaire. It is crucial to develop a widely supported climate plan that protects both people and nature on Bonaire and ensures the island is preserved for our children and future generations.

“The urgency is clear,” state the Executive Council and the chairperson of the Klimaattafel. “Climate change affects our entire ecosystem and livelihoods. Only by taking action now can we preserve a livable Bonaire.” The discussions within the Klimaattafel provide space for dialogue between inhabitants, businesses, and stakeholders. Together, we are working on an approach that will make Bonaire more resilient.

This dialogue was further fueled during the town hall meeting on December 18, where Deputy A. Cicilia explained the importance of the Klimaattafel Bonaire. The chairperson introduced the project group and presented the action plan, outlining how we will work together to develop a climate plan for a livable Bonaire. The meeting also provided space for questions and the sharing of ideas.

The discussions will continue in the first and second quarters of 2025, after which concrete plans and agreements will be outlined in a Climate Intent, and ultimately, a Climate Plan will be developed by early 2026. This process offers the community of Bonaire the opportunity to actively contribute to the future of their island.

With the establishment of Klimaattafel Bonaire, the Executive Council underscores its commitment to a sustainable future, in which the well-being of both people and nature takes precedence.
