CHRISTIAAN SMEETS MAKES HISTORY IN CARIBBEAN CHESS CUP 2026

The young Christiaan Smeets, member of Bonaire Jeugd Schaakclub has made history by achieving the second place in the Caribbean Chess Cup 2026.

Together with the club coach BJSC Christiaan traveled to Aruba where he played a tournament in the Open level, the highest level.

In addition, there were U12 and U18. BJSC had no players in these. From the beginning Christiaan fought hard. He started the tournament with an Elo-rating of 2033. In the tournament he won the best player of Aruba, FM Juan Pablo de Mey and the best of Corsou, CM Vaibhav Bedi.

Only one country participated in this category. In the nine rounds Christiaan won six games and drew two.

He drew with Jose Antonio of Panama and Sebastian Ortiz Monsalve of Colombia. The only loss was to defending champion FM Cabralis Quinn of Trinidad and Tobago.

With this result Christiaan scored seven points from nine games with a performance of 2127 Elo-raiting. Its result puts it up by 48 points of Elo di Fide.

Christiaan Smeets has just completed his VWO-6 and is planning to leave Bonaire. We wish Christiaan much success with his development in chess and with his studies in the future! In club we are planning for him to give a couple of demonstrations of his games played before he leaves Bonaire.
