CBCS ORGANISEERT 56E ANNUAL MONETARY STUDIES CONFERENCE OP CURAÇAO ‘VEERKRACHT DOOR TRANSFORMATIE’
Willemstad,- Van 12 tot en met 14 november 2025 organiseerde de Centrale Bank van Curaçao en Sint Maarten (CBCS) de 56e Annual Monetary Studies Conference (AMSC) op Curaçao, onder het thema ‘Veerkracht door transformatie’.
De AMSC is het oudste economische onderzoeksforum in het Caribisch gebied. De driedaagse conferentie, georganiseerd in samenwerking met het Caribbean Economic Research Team (CERT), bracht centrale bankiers, academici en economen uit de regio samen om onderzoek, inzichten en beleidsideeën uit te wisselen.
De conferentie benadrukte de essentiële rol van onderzoek binnen centrale banken voor het ontwikkelen van effectief en op feiten gebaseerd beleid. Elk jaar komen economen — met name van de centrale banken in de regio — samen op de AMSC om onderzoek over de Caribische economieën te presenteren en te bespreken.
CERT, een onderzoeksinstituut dat is opgericht door de centrale banken van de CARICOM-landen, coördineert het evenement. Dit jaar had de CBCS de eer de 56e editie te organiseren, waar 75 economen uit de regio aan deelnamen.
Het conferentiethema ‘Veerkracht door transformatie’ onderstreepte dat economische transformatie in een tijd van toenemende onzekerheid en mondiale onrust essentieel is voor het versterken van de veerkracht van Caribische economieën.
Tijdens de openingsceremonie op 12 november verwelkomde CBCS-president Richard Doornbosch de deelnemers in Willemstad en benadrukte: ‘Veerkracht in het Caribisch gebied moet bewust worden opgebouwd, via voortdurende productiviteitsgroei, inclusie, geloofwaardige beleidskaders en instellingen die zich kunnen aanpassen aan versnellende veranderingen.’
Hij vervolgde: ‘Klimaatrisico’s zijn structureel geworden, geopolitieke en handelsspanningen nemen toe, en digitale technologieën hervormen het financiële stelsel én de reële economie — waardoor grondig onderzoek en regionale samenwerking belangrijker zijn dan ooit’.
Het AMSC-programma bestond uit peer-reviewed onderzoeksessies met 19 discussienota’s, gegroepeerd rond regionale prioriteiten zoals groei en productiviteit, handel en toerisme, klimaat[1]en milieuduurzaamheid, buitenlandse directe investeringen (BDI), de toekomst van geld en betalingsverkeer, en overheidsfinanciën en begrotingsduurzaamheid.
De conferentie omvatte ook de Adlith Brown Memorial Lecture, verzorgd door mevrouw Jeanette Semeleer, president van de Centrale Bank van Aruba en een gerespecteerde stem in de Caribische gemeenschap, die later deze maand haar ambtstermijn als president afrondt. Op de laatste dag vond een Governors’
Panel plaats met vier presidenten van CARICOM-centrale banken. Zij bespraken ‘The Changing Role of the U.S. Dollar Amid Rising Stablecoins: Implications for Caribbean Resilience’, waarin werd onderzocht wat mondiale monetaire verschuivingen betekenen voor wisselkoersregimes,
reservebeheer, betalingssystemen, kapitaalstromen en financiële stabiliteit in Caribische economieën. De CBCS spreekt haar oprechte dank uit aan CERT voor het samenstellen van een doordacht en volledig programma; aan de auteurs, voorzitters en discussanten voor hun maandenlange onderzoekswerk en voorbereiding; en aan de Caribische centrale banken en universiteiten voor het al meer dan 50 jaar in stand houden van deze gemeenschap.
De Annual Monetary Studies Conference blijft samenwerking stimuleren en brengt onderzoekers, beleidsmakers en professionals samen om ideeën te delen, partnerschappen te versterken en het inzicht in de regionale economie te verdiepen

CBCS HOSTS 56TH ANNUAL MONETARY STUDIES CONFERENCE IN CURAÇAO “RESILIENCE THROUGH TRANSFORMATION”
WillemstadFrom,- 12 to 14 November 2025, the Centrale Bank van Curaçao en Sint Maarten (CBCS) hosted the 56th Annual Monetary Studies Conference (AMSC), the Caribbean’s longest-standing forum for economic research, under the theme “Resilience through Transformation”. Organized in partnership with the Caribbean Economic Research Team (CERT), the three-day, in-person conference brought together central bankers, academics, and economic experts from across the region to exchange evidence, insights, and policy ideas.
The conference highlighted the vital role of central bank research in shaping effective, evidence-based policy. Each year, economic researchers, particularly from the region’s central banks, come together at the AMSC to present and discuss work related to Caribbean economies.
CERT, a research institute established by the central banks of the CARICOM countries, coordinates the event. This year, the
CBCS had the honor of hosting the 56th edition, which welcomed 75 economists from across the region. The conference theme, “Resilience through transformation” emphasized that in an era of rising uncertainty and global turbulence, economic transformation is essential to strengthening the resilience of Caribbean economies.
Setting the tone at the opening ceremony on November 12, CBCS President Richard Doornbosch welcomed participants to Willemstad and underscored that “resilience in the Caribbean must be built by design, through steady gains in productivity and inclusion, credible policy frameworks, and institutions that can adapt to accelerating change”.
He added, “Climate risks are now systemic, geopolitical and trade tensions are intensifying, and digital technologies are reshaping finance and the real economy, making rigorous research and regional cooperation more important than ever”.
The AMSC program featured peer-reviewed research sessions consisting of 19 working papers organized around the region’s priorities, including growth and productivity, trade and tourism, climate and environmental sustainability, foreign direct investment, the future of money and payments, and public finances and fiscal sustainability.
The conference also included the Adlith Brown Memorial Lecture, delivered by Mrs. Jeanette Semeleer, President of the Centrale Bank van Aruba and a respected voice in the Caribbean community, who will conclude her tenure as Central Bank President later this month. On the final day of the conference a Governors’
Panel of four CARICOM central bank presidents, examined “The Changing Role of the U.S. Dollar Amid Rising Stablecoins: Implications for Caribbean Resilience,” exploring what global monetary shifts mean for exchange-rate regimes, reserve management, payment systems, capital flows, and financial stability in Caribbean economies.
The CBCS sincerely thanks CERT for putting together an insightful and comprehensive agenda, the authors, chairpersons and discussants for their months of dedicated research and preparation, and the Caribbean central banks and universities for sustaining this community for more than 50 years.
