STICHTING VOOR RECHTSHULP EN GELIJKE BEHANDELING IN CARIBISCH NEDERLAND OPGERICHT – MAAK KENNIS MET DE NIEUWE DIRECTEUR EN RAAD VAN TOEZICHT

Kralendijk,- Voor het eerst komt er op Bonaire, Sint-Eustatius en Saba een fysieke plek waar inwoners terechtkunnen voor gratis informatie, advies en ondersteuning bij juridische vragen en discriminatie. De stichting die deze dienstverlening gaat bieden, is nu officieel opgericht. De naam van de stichting op Bonaire is Lokèt Hurídiko, op Sint Eustatius en Saba Legal Desk. De stichting is een structureel vervolg op de succesvolle pilot Legal Desk, die al langere tijd op Saba en ook sinds kort op Sint Eustatius draait.

Bij deze stichting kunt u straks:

• Informatie en advies krijgen over juridische zaken, zoals conflicten met een werkgever, problemen met de huur of familiezaken;
• Melding doen van discriminatie die u ervaart, bijvoorbeeld wanneer u ongelijk behandeld wordt vanwege uw herkomst of uw beperking.

Dit is een belangrijke stap om ervoor te zorgen dat iedereen in het Caribische deel van Nederland dezelfde bescherming krijgt als in Europees Nederland.

Wat gebeurt er nu?

De komende maanden gaat de stichting medewerkers aannemen en locaties inrichten op de drie eilanden. Het doel is om de rechtsbescherming van inwoners te versterken, zodat u weet waar u naartoe kunt met juridische problemen of zorgen.

De dienstverlening start in de eerste helft van 2026. Zodra de plekken voor de loketten en de openingstijden bekend zijn, worden die met u gedeeld, onder andere via www.rijksdienstcn.com.

Wie gaat de stichting leiden?

Met de oprichting zijn ook de eerste gezichten van de stichting bekend. Suhendra Leon, die ruime ervaring heeft op het gebied van rechtsbescherming, is benoemd tot directeur-bestuurder. Daarnaast is een Raad van Toezicht samengesteld met Shirma Rouse, Reza Asgarali, en als voorzitter Marga Buys-Trimp.

“Dit is een bijzondere mijlpaal: Bonaire, Sint Eustatius en Saba hebben nu een stichting die gaat zorgen voor fysieke loketten voor hulp en advies bij juridische problemen én bescherming tegen discriminatie. Daarmee zorgen we voor toegankelijke rechtshulp en openen we de deur naar rechtvaardigheid en gelijke behandeling voor iedereen. Een voorziening waar al lang behoefte aan is op de eilanden.”

“Op 7 oktober stemde de Eerste Kamer in met de Wet bescherming discriminatie op Bonaire, Sint Eustatius en Saba. Daardoor gelden alle wetten die beschermen tegen discriminatie straks in het hele land. Met deze stichting zorgen we ervoor dat ook inwoners van Bonaire, Sint Eustatius en Saba laagdrempelig terechtkunnen als ze ongelijk behandeld worden. Dat is ontzettend belangrijk en ik heb er alle vertrouwen in dat de nieuwe directie en Raad van Toezicht dit werk met toewijding zullen uitvoeren.”

Het College voor de Rechten van de Mens krijgt met de nieuwe Wet bescherming tegen discriminatie op Bonaire, Sint Eustatius en Saba daarnaast een oordelende taak op de eilanden. Dit houdt in dat burgers een verzoek kunnen indienen bij het College om te beoordelen of er in hun situatie sprake is van discriminatie.

FOUNDATION FOR LEGAL AID AND EQUAL TREATMENT ESTABLISHED IN THE CARIBBEAN NETHERLANDS – MEET THE NEW DIRECTOR AND SUPERVISORY BOARD

Kralendijk,- For the first time, Bonaire, St. Eustatius, and Saba will have a physical location where residents can go for free information, advice, and support concerning legal issues and discrimination. The foundation that will offer these services has now been officially established.

The foundation’s local name on Bonaire is Lokèt Hurídiko, while on St. Eustatius and Saba it is called Legal Desk. This foundation serves as a structural continuation of the successful Legal Desk pilot project, which has been operational on Saba for a long time and recently began operating on St. Eustatius as well.

At this new foundation, you will soon be able to:

• Receive information and advice on legal matters, such as conflicts with an employer, issues concerning rent, or family affairs.
• Report discrimination that you experience, for instance, when you are treated unequally because of your background (origin) or a disability.

This is an important step to ensure that everyone in the Caribbean part of the Netherlands receives the same protection as in the European Netherlands.

What happens next?

In the coming months, the foundation will hire staff and set up locations on the three islands. The goal is to strengthen the legal protection of residents, so that you know where to go with legal problems or concerns.

The service will start in the first half of 2026. As soon as the locations for the desks and the opening hours are known, they will be shared with the public, including via https://www.rijksdienstcn.com/.

Who will lead the Foundation?

With the establishment, the first faces of the foundation are also known. Suhendra Leon, who has extensive experience in the field of legal protection, has been appointed as the Executive Director.

Additionally, a Supervisory Board has been formed with Shirma Rouse, Reza Asgarali, and Marga Buys-Trimp serving as its Chair.

With this foundation, we ensure that residents of Bonaire, St. Eustatius, and Saba also have an easily accessible place to turn to if they are treated unequally. This is tremendously important, and I have every confidence that the new management and Supervisory Board will carry out this work with dedication.”

With the new Anti-Discrimination Protection Act for Bonaire, St. Eustatius and Saba, the National Institute for Human Rights Caribbean Netherlands will also be given a role in assessing discrimination cases on the islands. This means that residents can submit a request to the Institute to assess whether discrimination has occurred in their situation.
