VOORMALIG POLITIEAGENT VEROORDEELD VOOR OUD EN NIEUW GEWELDSINCIDENT OP SABA

The Bottom,- Op 31 juli 2025 heeft het Gerecht in Eerste Aanleg in Bonaire, Saba en Sint Eustatius de voormalige politieagent G. M. veroordeeld voor bedreiging en meineed.

De inmiddels ontslagen agent van KPCN was tijdens de jaarwisseling van 2024 tijdelijk gestationeerd op Saba en bevond zich in zijn vrije tijd in een lokale horecagelegenheid. Daar raakte M. betrokken bij een opstoot, waarna hij zijn dienstvuurwapen trok en richtte op verschillende personen.

Het incident veroorzaakte destijds veel ophef op Saba. De Rijksrecherche heeft onder leiding van het Openbaar Ministerie BES uitvoerig onderzoek gedaan naar dit geweldsincident, waarna de officier van justitie besloot om politieagent M. ter vervolgen. In haar vonnis heeft de rechter geoordeeld dat M. die nacht zijn dienstvuurwapen niet op deze wijze mocht gebruiken en dat hij zich daarmee schuldig heeft gemaakt aan bedreiging.

Ook oordeelde de rechter dat M. later in zijn proces-verbaal bewust feiten en omstandigheden heeft aangedikt, verzwegen of verdraaid. De rechter legde M. als straf een voorwaardelijke gevangenisstraf op van 4 maanden met een proeftijd van 2 jaar. Daarnaast kreeg M. als bijkomende straf een beroepsverbod

opgelegd, waardoor hem gedurende 5 jaar wordt verboden als politieambtenaar te werken.

M. heeft twee weken de tijd om in hoger beroep te gaan tegen deze uitspraak.

FORMER POLICE OFFICER CONVICTED FOR NEW YEAR’S EVE VIOLENT INCIDENT ON SABA

The Bottom,- On July 31, 2025, the Court of First Instance in Bonaire, Saba, and Sint Eustatius convicted former police officer G. M. of making threats and of perjury.

The now-dismissed KPCN officer was temporarily stationed on Saba during the 2024 New Year’s Eve celebrations and was spending his off-duty hours at a local bar/restaurant.

There, M. became involved in a disturbance, after which he drew his service weapon and pointed it at several people. The incident stirred quite a commotion on Saba at the time.

The National Criminal Investigation Department, under the direction of the Public Prosecutor’s Office BES, conducted an extensive investigation into the violent incident, after which the public prosecutor decided to prosecute police officer M.

In her judgment, the judge ruled that M. should not have used his service weapon in that manner on the night in question and that he was therefore guilty of making threats.

The judge further found that M. had deliberately exaggerated, concealed, or distorted facts and circumstances in his subsequent report. The judge sentenced M. to a four months suspended sentence with a probation period of two years.

In addition, M. received an additional penalty of a professional ban prohibiting him from working as a police officer for five years.

M. has two weeks to appeal this sentence.
