Kralendijk,- Tourism Corporation Bonaire (TCB) is verheugd Cheky Zimmerman en Ilse DeLoyer te eren als Bonaire Friends van mei en juni 2026, als blijk van waardering voor hun vriendelijkheid en toewijding en de betekenisvolle impact die zij hebben gehad op bezoekers van Bonaire.

Cheky Zimmerman werd genomineerd door Lisa Phillips uit Maryland, Verenigde Staten, die een ontroerend verhaal deelde over de bijzondere band die zij en haar man met de lokale kunstenaar hadden opgebouwd, nadat ze hem in 2019 voor het eerst op Bonaire hadden ontmoet. Volgens Lisa groeide wat begon als waardering voor Cheky’s kunstwerken uit tot bewondering voor de persoon achter de schilderijen. Als kunstenaar ontdekte ze veel overeenkomsten in hun levensverhalen, van het opgroeien op een eiland en afkomstig zijn uit vissersgezinnen tot het nastreven van hun passie voor kunst. Lisa en haar man keerden in 2025 terug naar Bonaire, vastbesloten om Cheky weer te ontmoeten. Tijdens hun bezoek werden ze hartelijk verwelkomd door Cheky en zijn familie, waardoor wat jaren geleden begon als een toevallige ontmoeting, uitgroeide tot een betekenisvolle vriendschap, gebaseerd op vriendelijkheid, gedeelde ervaringen en een wederzijdse liefde voor kunst.

Ilse DeLoyer, de Bonaire Friend van juni, werd genomineerd door Clovis Stair vanwege de uitzonderlijke zorg, professionaliteit en persoonlijke aandacht die ze duikers op Bonaire biedt. Als ‘divemaster’, instructeur en bootkapitein werd Ilse geprezen om haar geduld, enthousiasme en vermogen om elke gast zich op zijn gemak en welkom te laten voelen. In de nominatie werd ook haar attente manier benadrukt om hulp te bieden wanneer dat nodig is, altijd met respect en oprechte zorg, waardoor gasten van alle leeftijden en niveaus ten volle van hun duikervaring kunnen genieten. Haar speelse persoonlijkheid en oprechte band met gasten hebben blijvende herinneringen gecreëerd voor gezinnen die jaar na jaar terugkeren naar Bonaire. In de nominatie werd ze liefdevol omschreven als hun ‘Dive Angel’ en iemand die meer is geworden dan alleen een duikgids, namelijk een echte vriendin voor het leven.

Via het initiatief Bonaire Friends worden bezoekers uitgenodigd om lokale bewoners voor te dragen die een positieve impact hebben gehad tijdens hun verblijf op Bonaire. Cheky Zimmerman was nominated by Lisa Phillips from Maryland, United States, who shared a heartfelt story about the special connection she and her husband developed with the local artist after first meeting him in Bonaire in 2019. According to Lisa, what began as an appreciation for Cheky’s artwork evolved into admiration for the person behind the paintings. As an artist herself, she discovered many similarities in their life stories, from growing up on islands and coming from fishing families to both pursuing their passion for art. Lisa and her husband returned to Bonaire in 2025, determined to reconnect with Cheky.
