BASKETBALBONDEN VAN HET CARIBISCH DEEL VAN HET KONINKRIJK TEKENEN HISTORISCHE INTENTIEVERKLARING VOOR VERSTERKTE REGIONALE SAMENWERKING

Kralendijk,-In een historische stap richting het versterken van de toekomst van basketbal in het Caribisch deel van het Koninkrijk der Nederlanden, hebben de basketbalbonden van Aruba, Bonaire,  St. Eustatius ,Sint Maarten en het openbaar lichaam van Saba een Intentieverklaring (Letter of Intent, LOI) ondertekend.

Hiermee spreken zij hun gezamenlijke toewijding uit om nauwer samen te werken en de sport gezamenlijk verder te ontwikkelen op de eilanden. De Nederlandse Basketball Bond (NBB) is formeel erkend in een aanvullende coördinerende rol. Een vertegenwoordiger van de Fundashon pa Deporte i Desaroyo di Kòrsou (FDDK) was als luisterend oor aanwezig namens Curaçao.

De LOI, ondertekend op 13 april, legt de basis voor intensievere communicatie, ontwikkeling van spelers en coaches, kennisdeling en mogelijk gezamenlijke programma’s voor jeugdbasketbal, zowel 3×3 als 5×5, arbitrage en competitieopzet. Hoewel de overeenkomst niet juridisch bindend is, geeft het een duidelijk gezamenlijk streven weer om het niveau en de zichtbaarheid van basketbal in de regio te verhogen.

Deze mijlpaal volgt op een reeks succesvolle samenwerkingsinitiatieven die de reeds ingezette beweging onderstrepen. Onder andere:

• “Weganan Interinsular” Basketbalevenement: Afgelopen weekend gehouden op Bonaire, bracht dit inter-eilandentoernooi jonge sporters samen van alle Nederlands-Caribische eilanden. Naast competitie stond het evenement ook in het teken van vriendschap en culturele uitwisseling. Het werd geprezen om zijn inclusieve karakter en het sterke talent dat werd getoond.
• Arbitragecursus door de NBB: Als belangrijke stap in het verbeteren van dearbitragekwaliteit, verzorgde de NBB een speciaal ontwikkelde training voor scheidsrechters, bijgewoond door vertegenwoordigers van elke deelnemende bond. De cursus richtte zich op uniforme regels, professionele ontwikkeling en aansluiting op internationale arbitragenormen.
• Fast Break-coachcursus verzorgd door de NBB: In 2024 zijn 95 jeugdcoaches uit alle zes eilanden opgeleid en gecertificeerd in het kader van dit programma.

“Wij geloven in de kracht van sport om onze gemeenschappen te verbinden en te versterken,” aldus Eddy Carrillo, interim-voorzitter van de Basketbalbond van Bonaire. “Deze intentieverklaring weerspiegelt niet alleen onze gezamenlijke visie, maar ook onze vastberadenheid om slimmer samen te werken.”

De rol van de NBB binnen deze samenwerking is ondersteunend en coördinerend — het bieden van begeleiding, het delen van middelen en het faciliteren van technische ontwikkeling waar gewenst. Hun betrokkenheid benadrukt het belang van blijvende verbindingen tussen de Caribische gebieden en het basketbalnetwerk in Europees Nederland.

Vooruitkijkend is het de bedoeling dat de basketbalbonden binnen zes maanden opnieuw samenkomen om de voortgang te evalueren en verdere programmalijnen uit te werken, waaronder mogelijke toernooien, trainingskampen en doorlopende ontwikkeling voor coaches, scheidsrechters en sportbestuurders.

Kralendijk,- In a landmark step toward strengthening the future of basketball across the Dutch Caribbean, the basketball federations of Aruba, Bonaire, St. Eustatius, Sint Maarten and the public entity of Saba have signed a Letter of Intent (LOI), committing to deeper collaboration and shared development of the sport across the islands.

The Nederlandse Basketball Bond (NBB) is formally acknowledged in a supplementary coordinating role, a representative of the Sports Development Foundation Curacao (FDDK) was present as listening party on behalf of Curacao.

The LOI, signed on the 13^th of April, sets the foundation for increased communication, player and coach development, knowledge-sharing, and potential joint programming in youth basketball, 3×3 as well as 5×5 basketball, officiating, and competition structure.

While the agreement is non-binding, it signals a clear collective ambition to elevate the standard and visibility of basketball within the region.

This milestone follows a series of successful collaborative initiatives that highlight the

momentum already underway. Among them:

• “Weganan Interinsular” Basketball Event: Held on the 11^th and 12^th of April on Bonaire, this inter-island tournament brought together young athletes from all Dutch Caribbean countries/territories, offering not only competition but camaraderie and cultural exchange. The event was praised for its inclusive spirit and strong display of regional talent.
• Referee Development Course by NBB: In a major step forward for officiating standards, the Nederlandse Basketball Bond (NBB) conducted a tailored referee training session attended by representatives from each of the participating island’s federations. The course focused on rule consistency, professional development, and alignment with international officiating practices.
• Fast Break coaches course supplied by the NBB. Where in 2024, 95 youth coaches basketball across all 6 islands were educated and certified.

“We believe in the power of sport to connect and uplift our communities,” said Eddy Carrillo, interim president of the Bonaire Basketball Federation. “This LOI reflects not only our shared vision, but our determination to work smarter together.”

The NBB’s role in this initiative is to act as a supportive and coordinating body — offering guidance, sharing resources, and facilitating technical development where invited. Their involvement underscores the importance of sustained connections between the Caribbean territories and the basketball ecosystem in the European Netherlands.

Looking ahead, the federations plan to reconvene within the next six months to assess progress and explore formalized programming, including possible tournaments, training camps, and continued development for coaches, referees, and administrators.
