VERNIEUWDE EXPO OVER VERZET TEGEN SLAVERNIJ GELIJKTIJDIG GEOPEND OP ABC-EILANDEN

Willemstad – Op zondag 23 augustus, de International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition, is op Aruba, Bonaire en Curaçao gelijktijdig de vernieuwde expositie ‘NOS: Kaminda Pasado i Presente ta topa’ geopend.

Met de vernieuwde tentoonstelling brengt het Herdenkingscomité Slavernijverleden de verhalen van mensen die zich op de zes Caribische eilanden binnen het Koninkrijk verzetten tegen slavernij en onderdrukking nadrukkelijker voor het voetlicht. Op een later moment wordt de vernieuwde expositie ook geopend op Sint Maarten, Saba en Sint Eustatius.

De vernieuwing van ‘NOS: Kaminda Pasado i Presente ta topa’ legt een sterker accent op resistance: de mensen die, lang voordat de slavernij formeel werd afgeschaft, op verschillende manieren hun vrijheid, waardigheid en menselijkheid opeisten. Daarmee vertelt de tentoonstelling het slavernijverleden niet uitsluitend vanuit onderdrukking en onvrijheid, maar juist ook vanuit verzet, moed en de voortdurende strijd voor vrijheid.

Verhalen van verzet van de zes eilanden

In de vernieuwde expositie worden verschillende heroes of resistance uit de geschiedenis van de eilanden uitgelicht. Onder hen bevinden zich The Saba 14, Maria, Flora, Tula, Thico, Martis di Catalina Janga, One-Tete Lokhay en Thomas Dupersoy.

Bijzondere aandacht is besteed aan de rol van vrouwen in het verzet tegen slavernij en koloniale onderdrukking. Hun verhalen zijn lange tijd minder zichtbaar geweest, terwijl ook vrouwen actief leidinggaven aan opstanden, vluchtten, anderen mobiliseerden en op verschillende manieren weigerden zich neer te leggen bij het systeem van slavernij.

De tentoonstelling bestaat uit verschillende visuele canvassen die deze verhalen tot leven brengen. Via QR-codes bij de expositie kunnen bezoekers daarnaast video’s bekijken waarin verder wordt ingegaan op de geschiedenis en betekenis van de verschillende personen en gebeurtenissen.

Tula centraal tijdens opening op Curaçao

Op Curaçao vond de opening plaats tijdens ‘Heroes of Freedom: A Heritage Experience’ in het kantoor van het Herdenkingscomité Slavernijverleden in Otrobanda.

Onderdeel van de avond was de première van een nieuwe documentaire over Tula, gemaakt door filmmaker German Gruber Jr. in opdracht van het Herdenkingscomité Slavernijverleden. In de documentaire van circa 45 minuten komen verschillende kenners van het slavernijverleden en het leven van Tula aan het woord.

Centraal staat de strijd die Tula op 17 augustus 1795 samen met vele anderen begon. De opstand groeide uit tot de grootste vrijheidsopstand in de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse Cariben. Ongeveer 2.000 mensen sloten zich uiteindelijk bij de beweging aan. Tula’s strijd voor vrijheid en menselijke waardigheid groeide uit tot een blijvend symbool van verzet.

Aansluitend op de documentaire vond een Bou’i Pal’i Tamarein plaats. Tijdens deze dialoogsessie gingen aanwezigen met elkaar in gesprek over de strijd die Tula heeft geleverd, zijn betekenis voor Curaçao en de rest van het Koninkrijk en de manier waarop zijn nalatenschap ook vandaag nog doorwerkt.

Van slavernij naar vrijheid en verder

‘NOS: Kaminda Pasado i Presente ta topa’ plaatst de verhalen van verzet binnen een bredere historische lijn. De tentoonstelling staat niet alleen stil bij de periode van slavernij en de formele afschaffing daarvan in 1863, maar laat ook zien dat de strijd voor daadwerkelijke vrijheid, gelijkwaardigheid en zelfbeschikking daarna doorging.

Daarmee nodigt de expositie bezoekers uit om anders naar het slavernijverleden te kijken: niet alleen naar wat mensen is aangedaan, maar ook naar de manieren waarop zij zich verzetten, vrijheid opeisten en daarmee de weg hielpen vrijmaken voor volgende generaties.

De gezamenlijke opening op Aruba, Bonaire en Curaçao vond bewust plaats op 23 augustus, de International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition. Deze internationale herdenkingsdag staat in het teken van de geschiedenis van de trans-Atlantische slavenhandel, het verzet daartegen en de strijd die uiteindelijk leidde tot de afschaffing van de slavernij.

Met de gelijktijdige opening op drie eilanden en de latere openingen op Sint Maarten, Saba en Sint Eustatius wil het Herdenkingscomité Slavernijverleden de verhalen van verzet uit de verschillende delen van het Koninkrijk met elkaar verbinden en toegankelijk maken voor een breed publiek.

Op Curaçao is ‘NOS: Kaminda Pasado i Presente ta topa’ te bezoeken bij het Herdenkingscomité Slavernijverleden aan de Bèlvedèrestraat 43–45 in Otrobanda. Op Bonaire is de expositie in de openbare bibliotheek te zien en op Aruba bij het Archivo Nacional di Aruba.

Willemstad – On Sunday, 23 August, the International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition, the renewed exhibition ‘NOS: Kaminda Pasado i Presente ta topa’ opened simultaneously in Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao.

Through the renewed exhibition, the Slavery Memorial Committee brings greater visibility to the stories of people across the six Caribbean islands of the Kingdom who resisted slavery and oppression. At a later date, the renewed exhibition will also open in Sint Maarten, Saba and Sint Eustatius.

The renewed ‘NOS: Kaminda Pasado i Presente ta topa’ places a stronger emphasis on resistance: on the people who, long before slavery was formally abolished, claimed their freedom, dignity and humanity in different ways. In doing so, the exhibition tells the history of slavery not solely through the lens of oppression and unfreedom, but also through resistance, courage and the ongoing struggle for freedom.

Stories of Resistance from the Six Islands

The renewed exhibition highlights several heroes of resistance from the history of the islands. Among them are The Saba 14, Maria, Flora, Tula, Thico, Martis di Catalina Janga, One-Tete Lokhay and Thomas Dupersoy.

Special attention is given to the role of women in resisting slavery and colonial oppression. Their stories have long received less visibility, despite the fact that women actively led uprisings, escaped enslavement, mobilised others and, in many different ways, refused to submit to the system of slavery.

The exhibition consists of a series of visual canvases that bring these stories to life. Through QR codes accompanying the exhibition, visitors can also watch videos that explore the history and significance of the individuals and events in greater depth.

Tula takes centre stage at Curaçao opening

In Curaçao, the exhibition was launched during ‘Heroes of Freedom: A Heritage Experience’ at the offices of the Slavery Memorial Committee in Otrobanda.

The evening included the premiere of a new documentary about Tula, created by filmmaker German Gruber Jr. and commissioned by the Slavery Memorial Committee. The approximately 45-minute documentary features several experts on the history of slavery and the life of Tula.

At its heart is the struggle for freedom that Tula began alongside many others on 17 August 1795. The uprising grew into the largest freedom uprising in the history of the Dutch Caribbean, with approximately 2,000 people eventually joining the movement. Tula’s fight for freedom and human dignity became an enduring symbol of resistance.

Following the documentary, a Bou’i Pal’i Tamarein was held. During this dialogue session, attendees reflected together on Tula’s struggle, his significance for Curaçao and the rest of the Kingdom, and the ways in which his legacy continues to resonate today.

From slavery to freedom and beyond

‘NOS: Kaminda Pasado i Presente ta topa’ places these stories of resistance within a broader historical continuum. The exhibition not only reflects on the period of slavery and its formal abolition in 1863, but also demonstrates how the struggle for genuine freedom, equality and self-determination continued long afterwards.

In doing so, the exhibition invites visitors to view the history of slavery from a different perspective: not only by considering what was done to people, but also by recognizing the ways in which they resisted, claimed their freedom and helped pave the way for generations to come.

The simultaneous opening in Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao was deliberately held on 23 August, the International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition. This international day of remembrance reflects on the history of the transatlantic slave trade, resistance to it and the struggle that ultimately contributed to the abolition of slavery.

Through the simultaneous opening on three islands, followed by later openings in Sint Maarten, Saba and Sint Eustatius, the Slavery Memorial Committee aims to connect stories of resistance from across the Caribbean parts of the Kingdom and make them accessible to a broad audience.

Exhibition open to the public free of charge

In Curaçao, ‘NOS: Kaminda Pasado i Presente ta topa’ can be visited at the Slavery Memorial Committee, Bèlvedèrestraat 43–45 in Otrobanda.

In Bonaire, the exhibition is on display at the public library, while in Aruba it can be visited at the Archivo Nacional di Aruba.
