WERKEN AAN DE WEERBAARHEID VAN DE EILANDEN: EEN NATURE BASED SOLUTIONS WORKSHOP KOMT NAAR BONAIRE

Kralendijk,- Tropische kustecosystemen zoals mangroven, zeegras en koralen vormen een belangrijk onderdeel van de veerkracht van eilanden.

Ze bieden natuurlijke kustbescherming, slaan koolstof op en versterken de biodiversiteit, waardoor ze onmisbaar zijn in de strijd tegen klimaatverandering. De workshop op Bonaire Van 13 tot en met 17 oktober komen belanghebbenden uit het Caribisch gebied op Bonaire samen voor een training over Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) voor klimaatverandering.

De workshop wordt verzorgd door WWF, Internos, Mangrove Maniacs, Tropical Restoration Network, STINAPA en DCNA. Dr. Lucy Gillis van het Delft Instituut voor watereducatie leidt de trainingen. Het doel De workshop richt zich op het ontwikkelen van adaptieve beheerstrategieën voor deze ecosystemen op het gebied van NbS en het verkennen van de voordelen en kansen die deze ecosystemen ons nu en in de toekomst bieden.

Deze week zal de kloof tussen toekomstige planning en praktische toepassing overbruggen. Deelnemers krijgen de gelegenheid om hun projecten te presenteren en feedback te ontvangen van de andere deelnemers en een panel van experts.

STINAPA zal inzicht geven in hun LENfest-project “Climate Resilience Project”, uitgevoerd in samenwerking met de Universiteit van Florida en RASSTER Lab, en de relevantie ervan voor het beheer van beschermde mariene gebieden.

WWF en partners zullen deelnemers uit de hele regio (van Mexico tot Suriname) uitnodigen om informatie over hun werk te leveren en hun expertise in de regio te delen, en zullen de tekorten aan financieringsmogelijkheden aanpakken.

Tot slot zal DCNA een workshop organiseren over de toepassing van de “conservation standards”, een raamwerk voor een strategisch plan voor het beheer en de monitoring van natuurparken. En tijdens de workshop zullen de deelnemers in de gelegenheid zijn om de prachtige mangroves van Bonaire bij Lac te bezoeken om daar te zien wat op het gebied van ‘nature based solutions’ wordt toegepast voor een gezond mangrove bos.

Kralendijk,- Tropical coastal ecosystems such as mangroves, seagrass, and corals are a key component of island resilience. They provide natural coastal protection, store carbon, and enhance biodiversity, making them essential in the fight against climate change.

Workshop on Bonaire From October 13th to 17th, stakeholders from the Caribbean will gather on Bonaire for a training session on Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) for climate change resilience. The workshop is organized by WWF, Internos, Mangrove Maniacs, Tropical Restoration Network, STINAPA, and DCNA.

Dr. Lucy Gillis of the Delft Institute for Water Education will lead the training sessions. The Goal The workshop will focus on developing adaptive management strategies for coastal ecosystems in the area of NbS and exploring the benefits and opportunities they offer us now and in the future.

Through a combination of in-person field exercises and online activities, participants will gain both knowledge and practical experience in applying NbS to strengthen the resilience of tropical coasts. The week will work to bridge the gap between future planning and practical application. Participants will have the opportunity to present their projects and receive feedback from the other participants and a panel of experts.

STINAPA will provide insights into their LENfest project “Climate Resilience Project”, conducted in collaboration with the University of Florida and RASSTER Lab and its relevance for managing marine protected areas.

WWF will have participants from across the region (spanning from Mexico to Suriname) to contribute information on their work and share their expertise in address funding gaps. Lastly, DCNA will host a workshop on applying the “conservation standards,” a framework for a strategic plan for the management and monitoring of natural parks.

During the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to visit Bonaire’s beautiful mangroves near Lac to see how nature-based solutions are being applied to create healthy mangrove forests. Want to participate?
