KUNSTWERK FRUTA DI GRASIA ONTHULD BIJ JICN

Kralendijk,- De Justitiële Inrichting Caribisch Nederland (JICN) heeft op Bonaire het kunstwerk Fruta di Grasia van kunstenaar Eugenie Boon onthuld.

Dit bijzondere beeld symboliseert groei, tweede kansen en de kracht van gemeenschap en staat permanent bij de ingang van de inrichting.

De sculptuur is geïnspireerd op de Dreifi di Laman, oftewel de zeedruif, een plant die groeit van bloem tot groene vrucht en uiteindelijk tot een rijpe druif.

Dit natuurlijke groeiproces weerspiegelt hoe mensen zich ontwikkelen, ieder in eigen tempo en op eigen wijze. Soms is hierbij ondersteuning nodig in de vorm van begeleiding en een veilige omgeving. Dit sluit aan bij de missie van JICN om mensen te begeleiden in hun traject van ontwikkeling en herstel.

Het kleurrijke kunstwerk bestaat uit vier vormen die samen omhoog spiralen en beïnvloed lijken door de noordoostelijke passaatwind. Elke vorm staat symbool voor een fase in het rijpingsproces van de zeedruif, en daarmee voor unieke individuen binnen één samenleving. De basis verwijst naar het vakje “dubbele kans” uit het bordspel Mens Erger Je Niet, waarmee de kunstenaar benadrukt dat iedereen recht heeft op nieuwe kansen.

Het kunstwerk is mede mogelijk gemaakt door het Rijksvastgoedbedrijf (RVB), dat verantwoordelijk is voor de bouw en het onderhoud van rijksgebouwen. Binnen het bouwbudget is ruimte gereserveerd voor kunst, waarmee Fruta di Grasia kon worden gerealiseerd.

Bij de realisatie van het kunstwerk hebben zowel medewerkers als gedetineerden van JICN een actieve rol gespeeld. Door deze samenwerking kreeg het kunstwerk een extra dimensie die past bij het streven naar re-integratie en herstel.

Fruta di Grasia is daarmee niet alleen een kunstwerk, maar ook een tastbaar symbool voor de tweede kansen die JICN biedt, en voor de kracht van samenwerking binnen de organisatie. Kunstenaar Eugenie Boon, geboren op Curaçao, wil met dit werk iets herkenbaars en blijvends teruggeven aan Bonaire.

ARTWORK FRUTA DI GRASIA UNVEILED AT JICN

Kralendijk,- The Judicial Institution Caribbean Netherlands (JICN) has unveiled the artwork Fruta di Grasia by artist Eugenie Boon on Bonaire.

This remarkable piece symbolizes growth, second chances, and the power of community. It is now permanently on display at the entrance of the institution.

The sculpture is inspired by the Dreifi di Laman, or sea grape — a plant that grows from flower to green fruit and eventually into a ripe grape. This natural growth process reflects how people develop, each at their own pace and in their own way. Sometimes, support is needed in the form of guidance and a safe environment.

This aligns with the mission of JICN to guide individuals in their journey of development and recovery.

The colorful artwork consists of four forms that spiral upward, seemingly influenced by the northeastern trade wind. Each form represents a phase in the ripening process of the sea grape and thus symbolizes unique individuals within one society. The base refers to the “double chance” square from the board game Mens Erger Je Niet, through which the artist emphasizes that everyone has the right to new opportunities.

The artwork was made possible with the support of the Rijksvastgoedbedrijf (RVB), which is responsible for the construction and maintenance of government buildings. A portion of the construction budget was reserved for art, allowing Fruta di Grasia to be realized.

Both staff and detainees at JICN played an active role in the creation of the artwork. Through this collaboration, the piece gained an extra dimension that reflects the goal of reintegration and recovery. Fruta di Grasia is therefore not just a work of art, but also a tangible symbol of the second chances JICN offers, and of the strength of collaboration within the organization.

Artist Eugenie Boon, born in Curaçao, aims to give something lasting and recognizable back to Bonaire through this piece.
