Kralendijk,- Stichting Pro Lagun waarschuwt al enige tijd voor de ernstige gezondheidsrisico’s en milieuschade als gevolg van de vervuiling rond de landfill en de afvalverbrandingsinstallatie op Lagun.

De recente onderzoeksrapporten van het RIVM en Environmental Compliance Limited (ECL)

bevestigen dat de uitstoot van schadelijke stoffen extreem hoog is en zich over een groot gebied heeft verspreid.

Het is onacceptabel dat de overheid nog steeds geen concrete maatregelen neemt om de gezondheid van de bevolking te beschermen en de veroorzaakte gezondheidsschade in kaart te brengen. Gevaarlijke uitstoot: normen massaal overschreden De testresultaten van de afvalverbrandingsinstallatie laten zien dat alle uitstootnormen zwaar overschreden zijn, zelfs bij een gecontroleerde test van slechts enkele dagen. De normen voor koolmonoxide werden tot meer dan 2000 keer overschreden, en ook dioxines en andere giftige stoffen werden in gevaarlijke hoeveelheden aangetroffen.

Deze tet staat in geen enkele verhouding tot de werkelijke blootstelling: de oven heeft vijf jaar lang zonder emissiebeperking gefunctioneerd, terwijl omwonenden herhaaldelijk werden blootgesteld aan giftige rook. Deze situatie vereist urgent gezondheidsonderzoek.

De overheid moet per direct een uitgebreid onderzoek laten uitvoeren, inclusief bloedonderzoeken, om de aanwezigheid van dioxines en zware metalen in het lichaam van bewoners vast te stellen. Landfill blijft een bedreiging voor gezondheid en milieu Uit het RIVM-onderzoek blijkt dat dioxinen en andere giftige stoffen tot 4 km westwaarts van de landfill in verhoogde concentraties zijn teruggevonden.

Buiten dit gebied is geen onderzoek uitgevoerd, waardoor de volledige impact nog onbekend is. Dioxines verspreiden zich via de lucht en kunnen zich kilometers verder afzetten. Dit betekent dat niet alleen de direct omwonenden, maar álle bewoners van Bonaire risico lopen. De landfill vormt daarnaast een structureel ecologisch gevaar.

De afvalberg blijft groeien en schuift steeds verder richting de kwetsbare lagune. Schadelijke stoffen spoelen bij regenbuien de natuur in, met verwoestende gevolgen voor het koraal en de mariene ecosystemen. De voortdurende branden maken de situatie nog urgenter.

Eisen van Stichting Pro Lagun Gezien de ernst van de situatie en de langdurige nalatigheid van de verantwoordelijke overheden, eist Stichting Pro Lagun: · Een onmiddellijk stop op het storten van afval op de huidige landfill en zo snel mogelijk realiseren van een duurzame (tussen)oplossing. ·

Geen afgifte van een vergunning voor de geplande olieverwerkingsinstallatie. Het produceren van brandstof uit afgewerkte olie op deze locatie is onacceptabel gezien de voortdurende brandrisico’s. · Een direct gezondheidsonderzoek onder de getroffen bewoners. De blootstelling aan zware metalen en dioxines moet met spoed worden vastgesteld.

Dit is een kwestie van volksgezondheid en kan niet langer worden uitgesteld. Met de resultaten van het ECL-onderzoek en de RIVM[1]conclusies is er geen enkele reden om dit nog langer uit te stellen. · De definitieve sanering (afgraven en afvoeren) van de landfill. Het opgestapelde afval breekt af en blijft schadelijke stoffen lekken via de poreuze koraalsteenbodem. Dit probleem lost zichzelf niet op en vereist een grootschalige sanering.

Overheid moet haar verantwoordelijkheid nemen De overheid heeft de plicht om haar inwoners en natuur te beschermen en alles in het werk te stellen om de schade te herstellen en verdere schade te voorkomen. Voortzetting van de huidige situatie en werkwijze bij Lagun is onacceptabel.

Deze milieuramp is vergelijkbaar met grote milieuschandalen in Nederland, zoals het gifschandaal in Lekkerkerk – en de schaal op Bonaire is volgens experts nog ernstiger; Lekkerkerk in het kwadraat! Milieuverontreiniging en volksgezondheid moeten geen onderwerp van eindeloze vergaderingen blijven.

De belangen van de bewoners en de natuur zijn decennialang gemarginaliseerd. Het is tijd voor concrete actie. De situatie is helder, de risico’s zijn vastgesteld, en de oplossing is onvermijdelijk: ingrijpen en de gezondheid van de inwoners en het milieu van Bonaire beschermen.

THE HEALTH OF ALL BONAIRIANS IS AT RISK – THE GOVERNMENT MUST ACT NOW

Kralendijk,- The Pro Lagun Foundation has been warning for some time about the serious health risks and environmental damage resulting from the pollution around the landfill and the waste incineration on Lagun.

The recent research reports from RIVM and Environmental Compliance Limited (ECL) confirm that emissions of harmful substances are extremely high and have spread over a large area. It is unacceptable that the government is still not taking concrete measures to protect the health of the population and to identify the health damage caused.

Hazardous emissions: standards massively exceeded The test results of the waste incinerator show that all emission standards were severely exceeded, even in a controlled test lasting only a few days. Carbon monoxide standards were exceeded by more than 2,000 times, and dioxins and other toxic substances were also found in dangerous levels.

This test is not comparable with the actual exposure: the oven operated for five years without emission limits, while local residents were repeatedly exposed to toxic smoke. This situation requires urgent health research. The government must immediately conduct an extensive examination, including blood tests, to determine the presence of dioxins and heavy metals in the bodies of residents.

Landfill Remains a Threat to Health and the Environment Research by RIVM shows that dioxins and other toxic substances have been found in elevated concentrations up to 4 km west of the landfill. No research has been conducted beyond this area, leaving the full extent of the impact unknown. Dioxins spread through the air and can settle kilometers away.

This means that not only the immediate residents but all inhabitants of Bonaire are at risk. The landfill also poses an ongoing ecological threat. The waste pile continues to grow and is encroaching further towards the fragile lagoon. Harmful substances are washed into nature during rainfall, with devastating consequences for coral and marine ecosystems. The persistent fires make the situation even more urgent.

Requirements of the Pro Lagun Foundation Given the seriousness of the situation and the long-term negligence of the responsible authorities, the Pro Lagun Foundation demands: · An immediate stop to the dumping of waste on the current landfill and realization of a sustainable (interim) solution as quickly as possible. · No permit issuance for the planned oil processing facility. Producing fuel from waste oil at this location is unacceptable given the ongoing fire risks. ·

An immediate health survey among the affected residents. Exposure to heavy metals and dioxins must be determined urgently. This is a matter of public health and cannot be postponed any longer. With the results of the ECL research and the RIVM conclusions, there is no reason to postpone this any longer. · The final remediation (excavation and removal) of the landfill.

The accumulated waste breaks down and continues to leak harmful substances through the porous coral stone bottom. This problem will not solve itself and requires large-scale remediation. Government must take its responsibility

The government has a duty to protect its residents and nature and to do everything in its power to repair the damage and prevent further damage.

Continuation of the current situation and working methods at Lagun is unacceptable.

This environmental disaster is comparable to major environmental scandals in the Netherlands, such as the poison scandal in Lekkerkerk – and the scale on Bonaire is even more serious, according to experts; Lekkerkerk squared! Environmental pollution and public health should not remain the subject of endless meetings.

The interests of residents and nature have been marginalized for decades. It is time for concrete action. The situation is clear, the risks have been identified, and the solution is inevitable: intervene and protect the health of Bonaire’s residents and environment.
