Willemstad,- On September 11, 2024, the new book Handbook Gender Studies in the Dutch Caribbean will be launched by the University of Curaçao Research Institute (UCRI) and the Chair of Culture, Community and History at the University of Curaçao Dr. Moises da Costa Gomez. This book is one of the results of the collaborative research project Cultural Practices of Citizenship under Conditions of Fragmented Sovereignty: Gendered and Sexual Citizenship in Curaçao and Bonaire conducted by the University of Curaçao and the University of Amsterdam, which took place from 2017 to 2023.
The Handbook Gender Studies in the Dutch Caribbean offers a comprehensive exploration of five decades of scholarly research, historical texts, and cultural and literary productions from the Dutch Caribbean islands. This extensive work covers all six islands in the region: Curaçao, Bonaire, Aruba, Sint Maarten, Sint Eustatius, and Saba. The book provides an overview of gender studies in this unique region and highlights the complex history of gender equality, race, colonialism, sexuality, and culture. By focusing on all six islands, it offers a holistic perspective on the regional dynamics and challenges faced by each island. The Handbook Gender Studies in the Dutch Caribbean makes gender studies in the Dutch Caribbean accessible to an international audience by combining academic writings with primary historical sources, translations, and personal contributions.
The launch event will take place from 2:00 PM to 5:30 PM in the auditorium of the University of Curaçao. During the event, various contributors from the islands will give brief presentations about their contributions to the book. The event will be held in a hybrid format, allowing participants to join both in-person and online.
