ORGANISATIE VAN GULF CARIBBEAN FISHERIES INSTITUTE CONFERENTIE 2026

Kralendijk,- Piskabon is sinds 2018 lid van de wereldwijde organisatie GCFI, Gulf Caribbean Fisheries Institute. Piskabon heeft drie keer deelgenomen aan presentaties op deze conferentie, samen met Stinapa en het Wereld Natuur Fonds.

Tot vorig jaar gaf Piskabon samen met Roffa Reefs een presentatie over het kweken van viseieren. Dit trok de aandacht van alle wetenschappers. Piskabon wordt erkend als een coöperatie die zich op een duurzame en verantwoorde manier inzet voor de vissers en de visserij op Bonaire. Bonaire werd hiermee erkend en kreeg veel erkenning.

GCFI werd in 1947 opgericht omdat wetenschappers wereldwijd, maar vooral in Latijns-Amerika en het Caribisch gebied, beseften dat er iets misging in en met het zeeleven. Riffen sterven uit, vissen worden schaars en klimaatverandering wordt alarmerend voor het voortbestaan ​​van ons ecosysteem.

Deze wetenschappers hebben zich gerealiseerd dat we samen via onderzoek tot een oplossing kunnen komen om ons zeeleven te beschermen.

Zij zagen en beseften het belang van deze conferentie en boden Piskabon aan om mee te werken aan de organisatie ervan, omdat ze het belang en de mogelijkheden zagen om Curaçao internationaal op de kaart te zetten in de visserij.

Met dit in gedachten benaderde Piskabon de Federashon Kooperativanan Uni di Produkshon (FKUP) van Curaçao en ook de Fundashon Ekonomia Social Korsou (FESK) van Curaçao. Vanuit FKUP benaderden we de heer Lutson Lucas en de heer Rutney Monte, vanuit FESK benaderden we de heer Jerson Harrigan. Piskabon heeft een werkrelatie en overeenkomst met FKUP. De heer Jerson Harrigan van FESK staat bekend om zijn expertise op het gebied van coöperaties en grote conferenties. Deze drie mensen omarmden het idee en de intentie meteen. Hieruit ontstond het idee voor een project om GCFI in Curaçao te organiseren. Een persoon die ook nauw betrokken is bij GCFI is mevrouw Stacey Mac Donald. Piskabon benaderde ook mevrouw Stacey.

Piskabon sent an invitation to all three deputies of that time to explain the magnitude of the conference and the significant significance that it has for Bonaire. Unfortunately, Piskabon did not receive a reaction to give the presentation. None of the deputies has shown interest for Piskabon to make the presentation to organize GCFI in Bonaire.

Piskabon has a very high name and reputation in this organization. Piskabon does not want to lose face with the board. The board was awaiting response from Piskabon. This has hurt us in Piskabon enormously. This has given Piskabon the feeling that the government has never taken Piskabon seriously or realized the seriousness of an organization like GCFI.

With this disappointment Piskabon knows that when the board of GCFI offered Piskabon to organize the conference, a delegation from Curaçao was also present. And they saw and realized the importance of this conference and offered Piskabon to give their involvement in organizing this conference because they see the importance and opportunity to put Curaçao on the international map of fisheries.

With this in mind, Piskabon approached the Federashon Kooperativanan Uni di Produkshon – FKUP of Curaçao and the Fundashon Ekonomia Social Korsou – FESK. From FKUP we approached Mr. Lutson Lucas and Mr. Rutney Monte, from FESK we approached Mr. Jerson Harrigan.
