Willemstad,- Deze week is een groot succes behaald doordat de Caribbean Cetacean Society (CCS) opnieuw een grote wetenschappelijke expeditie met aanzienlijke natuurbeschermingsimpact in de wateren van Curaçao heeft afgerond.

De missie werd geleid door Stacey Mac Donald, regionaal coördinator van CCS, een onderzoeker die op Curaçao is opgegroeid en haar carrière heeft gewijd aan de bescherming van haar eiland en de Caraïben. Haar leiderschap is niet alleen een bron van hoop, maar ook een ware inspiratie voor toekomstige generaties Curaçaoënaars: het laat zien hoe lokale mensen hun eigen eiland kunnen beschermen.

Ongekende resultaten voor Curaçao

• Several sightings of pygmy killer whales, a rarely documented species.
• Family of sperm whales with juveniles, an endangered species resident in the Caribbean.

Such discoveries highlight the richness of Curaçao’s marine environment and its global importance.

Such a sanctuary would also generate new opportunities for the island. It would create jobs, from local training initiatives to high-level scientific research, while anchoring knowledge and expertise in Curaçao for future generations. Protecting whales and dolphins, along with the ecosystems they depend on, would further strengthen the island’s resilience to climate change and coastal degradation, two of the greatest challenges facing small island states today.

Whales and dolphins themselves are much more than iconic symbols of the ocean; they are essential to its health.
