GALILEO SATELLIETSTATION OFFICIEEL GEOPEND ALS PRINSES CATHARINA-AMALIA SPACE INNOVATION PARK

Op woensdag 22 april werd het Galileo satellietstation op Bonaire officieel geopend. Tijdens de feestelijke bijeenkomst werd onthuld dat het park rondom het station is vernoemd naar Prinses Amalia. Het station is het eerste Europese satellietnavigatiesysteem dat is gebouwd op een van de Nederlandse Caribische eilanden.

Het satellietstation

Het station, bestaande uit drie schotelantennes, is gelegen op het WEB-terrein aan de Queen’s Highway op Bonaire, vlakbij de populaire snorkel- en duikplek 1000 Steps.

Het station maakt deel uit van het Galileo satellietnavigatiesysteem, dat onder andere wordt ingezet voor tijdsreferentie en plaatsbepaling. Het Galileo-project is het grootste Europese ruimtevaartproject ooit en is nauwkeuriger dan GPS. De Europese Commissie heeft Bonaire als locatie gekozen voor de realisatie van één van deze Galileo Sensor Stations (GSS), vanwege de strategische ligging in het Caribisch gebied.

Koninklijke naam

Tijdens een feestelijke bijeenkomst is de nieuwe naam van het park bekendgemaakt: het Prinses Catharina-Amalia Space Innovation Park. De vernoeming van de locatie naar de Prinses van Oranje onderstreept het belang en de strategische waarde van dit project binnen het Koninkrijk.

Kansen voor het Caribisch gebied

De nieuwe naam laat zien dat het park volop kansen biedt voor vernieuwing. Het station is een startplek voor de groei van ruimtevaarttechniek in de regio en dit biedt kansen voor ondernemers. Zij kunnen nieuwe bedrijven (startups) oprichten die werken met gegevens van satellieten.

Het station biedt ook kansen voor het onderwijs. Zo kan de lokale jeugd zich goed voorbereiden op de toekomst met lesprogramma’s. Denk hierbij aan lessen over techniek in de ruimte of over hoe satellieten berichten versturen.

De directeur-generaal van het Ministerie van Infrastructuur en Waterstaat, mevrouw Afke van Rijn, benadrukte dit: “Het GSS is erg belangrijk voor Bonaire. Het zorgt niet alleen voor meer banen en meer toerisme, het is ook goed voor de wetenschap en techniek op het eiland. Daarnaast brengt het nieuwe ideeën en innovatie naar Bonaire.”

On Wednesday 22 April, the Galileo satellite station on Bonaire was officially opened. During the opening ceremony, it was announced that the park around the station has been named after Princess Amalia. The station is the first European satellite navigation system to be built on one of the Dutch Caribbean islands.

The satellite station

The station, consisting of three satellite dishes, is located on the WEB site on Queen’s Highway on Bonaire, close to the popular snorkelling and diving spot 1000 Steps.

The station is part of the Galileo satellite navigation system, which is used, among other things, for time reference and positioning. The Galileo project is the largest European space project ever and is more accurate than GPS. The European Commission chose Bonaire as the location for the construction of one of these Galileo Sensor Stations (GSS), due to its strategic location in the Caribbean.

Royal name

The park’s new name was announced during a festive gathering: the Prinses Catharina-Amalia Space Innovation Park. Naming the site after the Princess of Orange underscores the importance and strategic value of this project within the Kingdom.

Opportunities for the Caribbean

The new name reflects the park’s great potential for innovation. The station serves as a hub for the growth of space technology in the region, presenting opportunities for new businesses. These businesses can set up start-ups that utilise satellite data.

The station is also opening up opportunities for education. For instance, local young people can prepare well for the future through educational programmes. These might include lessons on space technology or on how satellites transmit messages.

The Director-General of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, Ms Afke van Rijn, emphasised this: “The GSS holds significant importance for Bonaire, not only for its potential to generate employment and boost tourism, but also for fostering high-quality scientific and technological opportunities and innovation on the island.”
