DE NATIONALE OMBUDSMAN BEZOEKT OMWONENDEN LANDFILL BONAIRE

Kralendijk,- Op 11 september heeft de Nationale Ombudsman, de heer Van Zutphen, samen met zijn team een ontmoeting gehad met omwonenden van de stortplaats bij Lagun en het bestuur van Stichting Pro Lagun.

De bijeenkomst vond plaats thuis bij één van de bestuursleden, direct tegenover de landfill.

Tijdens het gesprek deelden bewoners hun zorgen over de voortdurende onzekerheid rondom de mogelijke gezondheidsschade die zij hebben opgelopen en het uitblijven van een gezondheidsonderzoek, ook voor de medewerkers van Selibon die op deze ongezonde plek hun werk moeten doen.

Ook wezen zij op het doorlopend ongesorteerd storten van afval, het feit dat deze situatie jarenlang wordt gedoogd, en de teleurstelling dat eerdere plannen voor sluiting van de landfill nooit zijn geslaagd. Ook nu zijn er plannen maar als er wordt doorgegaan met storten bij Lagun – zo verwachten de omwonenden en de belangenstichting – wordt de ramp alleen maar groter en de saneringswerkzaamheden complexer.

De plannen die er nu zijn om de situatie te gaan vergunnen en legaliseren werden door de omwonenden en het bestuur met scepsis ontvangen.

Hoewel er opnieuw plannen en visies worden gepresenteerd, ontbreekt het volgens de stichting nog altijd aan daadwerkelijke actie.

Pro Lagun benadrukt de urgentie van een nieuwe inzamel[1]en verwerkingslocatie, met gescheiden inzameling en afvoer van afval, om de landfill te ontlasten en verdere schade aan bewoners en natuur van Bonaire te voorkomen.

Dat kan geen dag meer wachten, de urgentie lijkt echter nog niet voldoende door te drinken bij de verschillende overheden. Daarnaast pleit de stichting voor preventief gezondheidsonderzoek onder omwonenden, inclusief degenen die in het verleden in de nabijheid van de landfill hebben gewoond. Het wordt tijd voor zichtbare acties die direct een positieve impact moeten hebben op de bewoners en hun omgeving.

THE NATIONAL OMBUDSMAN MEETS RESIDENTS LIVING NEAR THE BONAIRE LANDFILL

Kralendijk,- On September 11, the National Ombudsman, Mr. Van Zutphen, together with his team, met with residents living near the landfill at Lagun and the board of Stichting Pro Lagun.

The meeting took place at the home of one of the board members, directly across from the landfill. During the conversation, residents shared their concerns about the ongoing uncertainty regarding the potential health damage they may have suffered and the absence of any health investigation, also for Selibon employees who must work daily in these unhealthy conditions.

They also pointed to the continuous dumping of unsorted waste, the fact that this situation has been tolerated for years, and their disappointment that previous plans to close the landfill have never materialized.

Even now, while new plans are being presented, residents and the foundation fear that as long as dumping continues at Lagun, the disaster will only grow larger and remediation will become more complex.

Current proposals to grant permits and legalize the situation were met with skepticism by residents and the board. Although plans and visions are once again being put forward, the foundation stresses that real action is still lacking.

Pro Lagun emphasizes the urgent need for a new collection and processing site, with proper waste separation and removal, to relieve pressure on the landfill and prevent further harm to the people and nature of Bonaire.

This cannot wait another day, yet the urgency does not appear to be fully recognized by the different government bodies.

In addition, the foundation calls for preventive health research among residents, including those who in the past lived near the landfill. It is time for visible actions that immediately deliver a positive impact on residents and their environment.
