VOORAANKONDIGING CALL FOR PROPOSALS PROMOTIEBEURZEN VOOR CARIBISCHE ONDERZOEKERS

Woon je in het Caribische deel van het Koninkrijk der Nederlanden of ben je geboren op een van de zes eilanden (Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao, Saba, Sint Eustatius en Sint Maarten) en denk je erover na om te promoveren? Als je graag wil bijdragen aan wetenschappelijke kennis die kan helpen bij het aanpakken van belangrijke uitdagingen op de Caribische eilanden van het Koninkrijk der Nederlanden, dan moedigen wij je aan een intentieverklaring in te dienen!

Naar verwachting lanceert NWO in mei een nieuwe ‘Call for proposals’ voor Promotiebeurzen als onderdeel van het Programma Caribisch onderzoek: een multidisciplinaire benadering. De Call is bedoeld voor afgestudeerde onderzoekers die promotieonderzoek willen doen dat direct gerelateerd is aan of relevant is voor de Caribische eilanden van het Koninkrijk.

Over het programma

Het Programma Caribisch Onderzoek is in 2013 opgezet door het Ministerie van OCW. Het ondersteunt hoogwaardig onderzoek met het doel om de kennisbasis te versterken, onderzoekscapaciteit op te bouwen en bij te dragen aan de aanpak van urgente maatschappelijke vraagstukken in het Caribische deel van het Koninkrijk der Nederlanden (Caribische regio).

Deze ‘Call for proposals’ biedt Promotiebeurzen aan voor onderzoek dat:

• De wetenschappelijke kennisproductie op en over de Caribische regio vergroot en versterkt;
• Wetenschappelijke en maatschappelijke impact heeft op de eilanden;
• Grotendeels in de Caribische regio wordt uitgevoerd, zodat lokale relevantie en verbondenheid gewaarborgd zijn;
• Bijdraagt aan de lange termijn ontwikkeling van onderzoekscapaciteit en -infrastructuur in de Caribische regio.

Dit is een geweldige kans als je:

• Een PhD graad wil behalen aan een van de volgende universiteiten: Universiteit van Aruba, Universiteit van Curaçao, Universiteit van St. Martin of in Nederland;
• Geboren bent op of momenteel woont op een van de zes Caribische eilanden van het Koninkrijk*;
• In het bezit bent van een masterdiploma of gelijkwaardig;
• Gemotiveerd bent om een PhD graad te behalen die de Caribische regio ten goede komt.

Door meer promovendi uit en op de Caribische regio te steunen, wil NWO lokale universiteiten, onderzoeksorganisaties en kennisnetwerken helpen versterken.

* Dit is een vereiste als je een PhD graad wilt behalen aan een onderzoeksorganisatie in Nederland. Alle voorwaarden zijn te vinden in de Call for proposals.

Budget

Per project kan een subsidiebedrag van maximaal €350.000 worden aangevraagd. De maximale duur van het voorgestelde project is 48 maanden/vier jaar (of equivalent deeltijd). 

Deadlines

• De deadline voor het indienen van intentieverklaringen is 24 juni 2025, vóór 17:00:00 CEST/11:00:00 AST.
• De deadline voor het indienen van vooraanmeldingen is 16 september 2025, vóór 17:00:00 CEST/11:00:00 AST.
• De uiterste termijn voor het indienen van volledige voorstellen is 24 februari 2026, vóór 17:00:00 MET/12:00:00 AST.

Als je geen intentieverklaring hebt ingediend, is het niet mogelijk om een vooraanmelding in te dienen.

Wat is een Intentieverklaring?

Een aanvraag begint met een Intentieverklaring, gevolgd door een vooraanmeldingsfase, volledige aanvraag fase en een interview. Met een Intentieverklaring geef je aan dat je van plan bent een aanvraag in te dienen voor deze Call for Proposals. Met de Intentieverklaring kan NWO het verwachte aantal aanvragen vaststellen. Deze Intentieverklaring maakt geen deel uit van de beoordelingsprocedure, maar is verplicht en moet vóór de deadline voor indiening worden ingediend (zie paragraaf Deadlines).

In deze intentieverklaring vragen we om nadere informatie over de beoogde onderzoeksorganisatie van promotie en begeleiding (verantwoordelijke promotor, copromotor en/of andere (dagelijkse) begeleiders) in relatie tot het beoogde onderzoeksvoorstel. Je kunt in de vooraanmelding nog wijzigingen aanbrengen in je beoogde onderzoeks- en begeleidingsteam. Als je geen intentieverklaring (en verplichte bijlage) heeft ingediend, is het niet mogelijk om deel te nemen aan de indienprocedure.

This May, NWO is expected to launch a new Call for proposals for PhD scholarships as part of the Programme Caribbean Research: a multidisciplinary approach. The Call is tailored to researchers with a master’s degree who want to carry out PhD research that is directly related or relevant to the Caribbean islands of the Kingdom.

About the programme

The Caribbean Research Programme was established by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science and the Dutch Research Council (NWO) in 2013. It supports high-quality research with the goal to strengthen the knowledge base, build research capacity, and help address urgent societal issues in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands (Caribbean region).

This Call for proposals will offer PhD scholarships for research that:

•             Increases and strengthens scientific and scholarly knowledge production on and about the Caribbean region.

•             Has scientific and societal impact on the islands.

•             Is carried out primarily in the Caribbean region, ensuring local relevance and connection.

•             Contributes to the long-term development of research capacity and infrastructure in the Caribbean region.

What is a Statement of intent?

An application starts with a Statement of intent, followed by a pre-proposal phase, a full proposal phase and an interview. With a Statement of intent, you indicate that you intend to submit an application for this Call for proposals. The Statement of intent allows NWO to establish the expected number of applications. This Statement of intent is not part of the assessment procedure, however, is compulsory and must be submitted before the submission deadline (see paragraph Deadlines).

In this Statement of intent, we ask further information about the intended research organisation and supervision (responsible PhD supervisor (promotor), co-promotor and/or other (daily) supervisors) in relation to the intended research proposal. Please note that you are allowed to make adjustments in your intended research and supervisory team in the pre-proposal. If you have not submitted a Statement of intent (and compulsory annex), it is not possible to participate in the application process.
