STICHTING PRO LAGUN IN GESPREK MET KAMERDELEGATIE

Kralendijk,- 11 mei 2025 – Tijdens het werkbezoek van de Vaste Kamercommissie voor Koninkrijksrelaties aan Bonaire op donderdag 8 mei, brachten de volksvertegenwoordigers ook een bezoek aan de landfill bij Lagun.

Hier gingen zij in gesprek met het bestuur van Stichting Pro Lagun en enkele direct omwonenden van de stortplaats. Het bestuur van de stichting en de aanwezige bewoners spraken hun waardering uit voor het bezoek en de oprechte belangstelling van de Kamerleden.

In drie korte presentaties bracht Pro Lagun haar diepgewortelde zorgen onder de aandacht over de ernstige gevolgen voor de volksgezondheid en de aanhoudende milieuschade die het gevolg zijn van de jarenlange verontreiniging vanuit de landfill.

Tijdens het overleg werd ook stilgestaan bij de lange weg die nog voor ons ligt.

Stichting Pro Lagun heeft de delegatie op het hart gedrukt om, binnen hun parlementaire rol, nadrukkelijk de verantwoordelijke ministers en staatssecretarissen te bevragen over deze situatie. Daarbij is een pleidooi gehouden om niet uitsluitend te focussen op lange termijnplannen, maar juist ook oog te hebben voor de reeds aangerichte gezondheidsschade en de noodzakelijke korte termijnmaatregelen.

Die moeten gericht zijn op het voorkomen van verdere gezondheidsrisico’s én op bescherming van natuur en milieu.

Over Stichting Pro Lagun Stichting Pro Lagun is voortgekomen uit een al decennialang actieve bewonersvereniging en komt op voor de belangen van de bewoners en de natuur van Bonaire, met specifieke aandacht voor de problematiek rondom de landfill.

De stichting maakt zich sterk voor:

• het onmiddellijk blussen van de ondergrondse branden;

• tijdelijke relocatie van omwonenden;

• individueel (preventief) gezondheidsonderzoek;

• structurele monitoring van volksgezondheid;

• sluiting van de landfill locatie bij Lagun;

Voor Stichting Pro Lagun staat het veiligstellen van een gezonde leefomgeving centraal, nu én voor toekomstige generaties.

PRO LAGUN FOUNDATION MEETS WITH PARLIAMENTARY DELEGATION

Kralendijk,-  11 May 2025 – As part of their visit to Bonaire on Thursday, 8 May, members of the Permanent Parliamentary Committee for Kingdom Relations also visited the landfill site at Lagun.

There, they engaged in discussions with the board of the Pro Lagun Foundation and several residents living in close proximity to the landfill.

The foundation’s board and the attending residents expressed their appreciation for the visit and the sincere interest shown by the Members of Parliament.

In three brief presentations, Pro Lagun shared its deep-rooted concerns regarding the serious public health consequences and ongoing environmental damage resulting from decades of pollution caused by the landfill.

During the meeting, attention was also given to the long road that still lies ahead. Pro Lagun urged the delegation to use their parliamentary roles to hold the responsible ministers and state secretaries to account.

The foundation emphasized the need to not only focus on long-term action plans, but also to acknowledge the health damage that has already occurred and the importance of short-term measures.

These should aim to prevent further health risks and protect both the environment and public well-being.
