IMPULS VOOR BESCHERMING VAN CARIBISCHE NATUURGEBIEDEN DCNA ONTVANGT RUIM 1,7 MILJOEN EURO EXTRA VAN DE POSTCODE LOTERIJ BONAIRE,

Kralendijk,- Afgelopen week ontving Dutch Caribbean Nature Alliance (DCNA) een extra financiële bijdrage van de Nationale Postcode Loterij.

Deze bijdrage ontvangen zij bovenop de meerjarige bijdrage van 500.000 euro per jaar. De extra bijdrage is van groot belang voor het werk van DCNA en zal worden gebruikt voor de bescherming en het herstel van natuurgebieden in het Caribisch deel van het Nederlands Koninkrijk.

Jonne Arnoldussen, managing director van de Postcode Loterij, overhandigde op Bonaire een cheque aan DCNA-directeur Arno Verhoeven. Dit vond plaats tijdens de laatste DCNA-bestuursvergadering van het jaar, waar de aangesloten natuurbeschermingsorganisaties van de zes eilanden aanwezig waren.

De natuurgebieden in het Caribisch deel van het Nederlands Koninkrijk, zoals koraalriffen in de oceaan en mangrovebossen aan de kust, zijn de afgelopen decennia steeds sneller in kwaliteit en omvang achteruitgegaan. De effecten van klimaatverandering, vervuiling, overbevissing en invasieve soorten zijn de belangrijkste oorzaken van deze achteruitgang.

De gevolgen hiervan zijn zowel ecologisch als maatschappelijk onwenselijk. Deze natuurgebieden zijn van groot belang voor de biodiversiteit en spelen een cruciale rol in de bescherming van de eilanden tegen de gevolgen van klimaatverandering.

Mangrovebossen helpen bijvoorbeeld tegen de golfslag van steeds vaker voorkomende tropische stormen. Daarnaast zijn natuurgebieden een belangrijke bron van inkomsten voor de eilandbewoners, aangezien de koraalriffen een toeristische attractie vormen.

Met de extra bijdrage van 1,7 miljoen euro van de Postcode Loterij kan DCNA zich richten op projecten die focussen op meerdere eilanden om zo de grootste impact te realiseren.

Voorbeelden hiervan zijn projecten gericht op het herstel van mangrovebossen en land vegetatie. Dit regionale programma wordt ontwikkeld en uitgevoerd in samenwerking met de lokale alliantiepartners van DCNA op de zes Nederlands-Caribische eilanden: Aruba Conservation Foundation, CARMABI, STINAPA, Saba Conservation Foundation, St. Eustatius National Parks Foundation (STENAPA) en Nature Foundation Sint Maarten.

Het Wereld Natuur Fonds-Nederland (WWF-NL) ondersteunt dit programma met kennis en fondsen. Arno Verhoeven, directeur van DCNA, vertelt: “Deze extra bijdrage is van enorme waarde voor DCNA en voor de natuurgebieden die onze hulp zo hard nodig hebben.

BOOST FOR THE PROTECTION OF CARIBBEAN NATURE AREAS DCNA RECEIVES OVER €1.7 MILLION EXTRA FROM THE POSTCODE LOTTERY

Kralendijk,- Last week, the Dutch Caribbean Nature Alliance (DCNA) received an additional financial contribution from the National Postcode Lottery.

This funding is in addition to their annual €500,000 multi-year contribution.

The extra funds are crucial for DCNA’s work and will be used for the protection and restoration of nature areas in the Caribbean part of the Dutch Kingdom. Jonne Arnoldussen, Managing Director of the Postcode Lottery, presented a symbolic check to DCNA Director Arno Verhoeven on Bonaire. The event took place during DCNA’s final board meeting of the year, attended by representatives from nature conservation organizations across the six Dutch Caribbean islands.

Nature areas in the Caribbean part of the Dutch Kingdom, such as coral reefs in the ocean and mangrove forests along the coast, have experienced a rapid decline in both quality and size over recent decades. The primary causes of this degradation are climate change, pollution, overfishing, and invasive species, leading to undesirable ecological and social consequences.

These nature areas are critical for biodiversity and play a crucial role in protecting the islands from the effects of climate change. For example, mangrove forests help buffer the coastline from increasingly frequent tropical storms. Additionally, these areas are an essential source of income for island residents, as coral reefs are a major tourist attraction.

With the additional €1.7 million from the Postcode Lottery, DCNA can focus on multi-island projects to achieve maximum impact. Examples include initiatives aimed at restoring mangrove forests and terrestrial vegetation.

This regional program will be developed and implemented in collaboration with DCNA’s local alliance partners on the six Dutch Caribbean islandsAruba Conservation Foundation, CARMABI, STINAPA, Saba Conservation Foundation, St. Eustatius National Parks Foundation (STENAPA) and Nature Foundation Sint Maarten.

Wereld Natuur Fonds-Nederland (WWF-NL) will also support this program with expertise and funding. Arno Verhoeven, DCNA Director, said: “This additional funding is of immense value to DCNA and to the nature areas that urgently need our help.
