CBCS ONDERZOEKT FACTOREN ACHTER INSTROOM BUITENLANDSE DIRECTE INVESTERINGEN IN CURAÇAO

WILLEMSTAD,-  Buitenlandse directe investeringen (BDI) spelen een cruciale rol bij economische ontwikkeling, onder meer via werkgelegenheid, innovatie en kapitaalvorming.

De Centrale Bank van Curaçao en Sint Maarten (CBCS) verricht daarom onderzoek naar de belangrijkste macro-economische en institutionele factoren die van invloed zijn op BDI in Curaçao.

Doel is beter te begrijpen welke factoren bepalend zijn voor buitenlandse investeringen en hoe het investeringsklimaat kan worden versterkt. Dit is voor de CBCS van groot belang, aangezien BDI een essentiële bron van externe financiering vormen.

Buitenlandse directe investeringen zijn transacties waarbij een individu of onderneming uit het buitenland ten minste 10% van de aandelen in een lokaal bedrijf verwerft. Dit duidt op een langetermijnbetrokkenheid en wezenlijke invloed op de bedrijfsvoering.

Ondanks het belang van BDI voor de economische ontwikkeling zijn de achterliggende drijfveren in de lokale context tot dusver nauwelijks onderzocht.

Met dit onderzoek wil de CBCS die leemte vullen door gegevens te verzamelen bij Curaçaose ondernemingen die eerder BDI hebben ontvangen.

Daarbij wordt gekeken naar de factoren die buitenlandse investeringen hebben aangetrokken en naar de percepties van investeerders over het ondernemingsklimaat in Curaçao. De bevindingen zullen duidelijk maken welke factoren het zwaarst wegen in de beslissingen van buitenlandse investeerders en hoe beleid kan worden vormgegeven om de instroom van BDI duurzaam te bevorderen.

In 2026 gaat een vergelijkbaar onderzoek in Sint Maarten van start. Deelnemende bedrijven in Curaçao krijgen binnenkort van de CBCS een uitnodiging om via een beveiligde link een onlinevragenlijst in te vullen.

De enquête is anoniem en alle verzamelde gegevens worden strikt vertrouwelijk behandeld. De enquête is in het Engels opgesteld en neemt naar verwachting circa 15 minuten in beslag. De CBCS verzoekt alle betrokken bedrijven de enquête vóór 1 oktober 2025 in te vullen. Uw inzichten zijn cruciaal voor dit onderzoek en kunnen bijdragen aan de ontwikkeling van nieuwe strategieën om het Curaçaose investeringsklimaat te versterken.

Willemstad,- Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) plays a vital role in economic development, contributing to job creation, innovation, and capital formation.

To this end, the Centrale Bank van Curaçao en Sint Maarten (CBCS) is conducting a study on the main macroeconomic and institutional factors that influence FDI in Curaçao. The goal is to get a better understanding what attracts FDI and to explore ways to improve Curaçao’s investment climate.

This is especially important for the CBCS, since FDI is a key source of external financing. Foreign direct investment refers to an individual or company from abroad acquiring at least 10% stake in a local business- signaling a long-term commitment and meaningful influence over its operations.

Despite its importance in economic development, the drivers of FDI inflows remain underexplored in the local context. This study seeks to fill that gap by collecting data directly from companies in Curaçao that have previously received FDI, with the goal of identifying the main triggers that attracted foreign investment and assessing investors’ perceptions of Curaçao’s business climate.

The findings will help identify which factors most significantly influence foreign investors’ decisions and how policy can be shaped to attract FDI in a sustained manner.

A similar study will be launched in Sint Maarten in 2026. Participating companies in Curaçao will receive in the coming days an invitation from the CBCS to complete an online survey via a secure link. The survey is anonymous, and all collected data will be treated with strict confidentiality. The survey is in English and the estimated time to complete the survey is approximately 15 minutes.
