Willemstad,- Zr.Ms. Friesland heeft weer een grote partijen drugs onderschept in het Caribisch gebied. Dat gebeurde bij acties op 11 juli en 2 augustus. De vangsten waren goed voor bijna 5.800 kilo marihuana. Dat is vandaag bekendgemaakt.

De Amerikaanse kustwacht en maritieme patrouillevliegtuigen van de Kustwacht Caribisch Gebied ontdekten de zogenoemde go-fast in juli. Na een waarschuwingsseintje handelde het marineschip meteen. Het stuurde de Frisc-onderscheppingsboten en de aan boord gestationeerde Amerikaanse kustwachthelikopter op het smokkelbootje af. Dit werd tot stoppen gedwongen.

Op 2 augustus was het opnieuw raak. Na een korte achtervolging door de Frisc’s hield de Friesland weer een drugsboot tegen.

Bij beide drugstransporten ging het om smokkel van marihuana. In het eerste geval betrof het 4.131 kilo, in het tweede 1.641 De drugs zijn overgedragen aan de Amerikaanse kustwacht.

Zr.Ms. Friesland opereert sinds eind mei als stationsschip in het Caribisch gebied. Sindsdien wist de marine 7 drugstransporten te onderscheppen, goed voor meer dan 13.500 kilo verdovende middelen.

Tijdens drugsbestrijdingsoperaties werkt de Nederlandse marine zoals gebruikelijk afwisselend samen met de Caribische kustwacht en de Amerikaanse kustwacht. Het stationsschip staat ook paraat om humanitaire hulp te bieden bij natuurrampen zoals orkanen.

HNLMS FRIESLAND ONCE MORE WITH AN INTERCEPTION OF DRUGS IN THE CARIBBEAN SEA

Willemstad,- HNLMS Friesland once again has intercepted another large shipment of drugs in the Caribbean. This occurred during operations on July 11 and August 2. The seizures amounted to nearly 5,800 kilograms of marijuana. The announcement was made today.

The U.S.A Coastguard and the Royal Marine patrol planes of the Coastguard Caribbean region discovered the so-called go-fast in July. After a warning signal, the naval vessel acted immediately. HNLMS Friesland has been operating as a station ship in the Caribbean since the end of May. Since then, the navy has intercepted seven drug shipments, totaling over 13,500 kilograms of narcotics.

During counter-narcotics operations, the Dutch Navy alternates with the Caribbean Coast Guard and the U.S. Coast Guard.

The station ship is also on standby to provide humanitarian assistance during natural disasters such as hurricanes.
