BLUE DEFENDERS & ROFFAREEFS BUNDELEN KRACHTEN VOOR ONDERZOEK OP ZEE

Kralendijk,- Aanstaande woensdag start de nieuwe expeditie van Blue Defenders rond Bonaire. Tijdens dit veldonderzoek op open zee richt de organisatie zich op walvissen, dolfijnen én haaien.

Voor het haaienonderzoek wordt gebruikgemaakt van een constructie met onderwatercamera, de BRUV (Baited Remote Underwater  Video). Daarmee worden beelden gemaakt van haaien in hun natuurlijke omgeving. Met deze methode wil Blue Defenders de basis leggen voor een groter onderzoeksproject naar haaien in Caribisch Nederland.
Samenwerking met RoffaReefs

Tijdens de expeditie werkt Blue Defenders samen met RoffaReefs, een programma ontwikkeld in Diergaarde Blijdorp, Rotterdam. RoffaReefs onderzoekt en kweekt zeevissen om koraalriffen te beschermen en te herstellen en is actief op Bonaire en in Diergaarde Blijdorp. Het team verzamelt tijdens de expeditie viseieren op open zee en voert metingen van de waterkwaliteit uit.

Schoon water is de basis voor gezond zeeleven: dolfijnen zijn afhankelijk van sterke vispopulaties, vissen hebben schoon water nodig om zich voort te planten, en de lokale economie vertrouwt op diezelfde zee voor voedsel en bijvoorbeeld duiktoerisme.

De drie pijlers van RoffaReefs
RoffaReefs werkt samen met PISKABON en andere lokale organisaties. Op die manier is er een aanpak ontwikkeld met drie pijlers: de natuur zelf, de lokale gemeenschap en de wetenschap. Het onderzoek verbindt de kennis van lokale vissers met moderne wetenschap.

Van Eggspedition naar bescherming
Dolfijnen zijn een belangrijke graadmeter voor de gezondheid van de zee. Toch is er nog weinig bekend over de vissen die zij eten, vooral in de eerste dagen van hun leven. Tijdens de Eggspedition verzamelt RoffaReefs viseieren. Met behulp van kunstmatige intelligentie (AI) en automatische foto-analyse kunnen de soorten beter worden herkend. Uiteindelijk wil het programma een paaikalender maken voor zeevissen. Met die kalender kunnen belangrijke paaigebieden in de natuur beter worden gevonden en beschermd.

Gezamenlijk doel
De expeditie van Blue Defenders en RoffaReefs brengt nieuwe inzichten voor het behoud van walvissen, dolfijnen, haaien en koraalriffen. Beide organisaties werken samen aan hetzelfde doel: een gezonde zee vol leven.

Kralendijk,- This Wednesday, Blue Defenders will embark on a new expedition around Bonaire. During this field research on the open sea, the organization will focus on whales, dolphins, and sharks. For shark research, a construction with an underwater camera, the BRUV (Baited Remote Underwater Video), will be used. This will be used to capture images of sharks in their natural environment. With this method, Blue Defenders wants to lay the foundation for a larger research project on sharks in the Caribbean Netherlands.

Collaboration with RoffaReefs
During the expedition, Blue Defenders is collaborating with RoffaReefs, a program developed at Blijdorp Zoo Rotterdam. RoffaReefs researches and breeds marine fish to protect and restore coral reefs and is active on Bonaire and at Blijdorp Zoo. During the expedition, the team collects fish eggs in the open sea and measures water quality.

Clean water is the basis for healthy marine life: dolphins depend on strong fish populations, fish need clean water to reproduce, and the local economy relies on that same sea for food and, for example, diving tourism.

The three pillars of RoffaReefs
RoffaReefs works together with PISKABON and other local organizations. This has resulted in the development of a three-pillar approach: nature itself, the local community, and science. The research combines the knowledge of local fishermen with modern science.

From Eggspedition to protection
Dolphins are an important indicator of the health of the sea. Yet little is known about the fish they eat, especially in the first days of their lives. During Eggspedition, RoffaReefs collects fish eggs. Artificial intelligence (AI) and automatic photo analysis are used to better identify the species. Ultimately, the program aims to create a spawning calendar for marine fish. This calendar will make it easier to locate and protect important spawning areas in nature.

Common goal
The Blue Defenders and RoffaReefs expedition brings new insights into the conservation of whales, dolphins, sharks, and coral reefs. Both organizations are working together toward the same goal: a healthy sea, teeming with life.
