CARIBISCHE STUDENTEN BETER VOORBEREID NAAR NEDERLAND

Kralendijk,- Dienst Uitvoering Onderwijs (DUO) brengt van 10 maart tot en met 11 april 2025 een bezoek aan het Caribisch gebied.

Er worden tijdens het bezoek tijdelijke servicekantoren geopend. Ook organiseert DUO voorlichtingsbijeenkomsten over studiefinanciering. Hierin is ook aandacht voor hoe studenten met het burgerservicenummer (BSN) dat zij krijgen zich beter kunnen voorbereiden op hun studie in Nederland. 

Als studenten studiefinanciering aanvragen, krijgen zij sinds 1 april 2024 automatisch ook een BSN. Hiermee kunnen studenten voor vertrek naar Nederland alvast een DigiD regelen, waarmee ze kunnen inloggen op websites van de Nederlandse overheid. Zo kunnen studenten onder andere in Mijn DUO alvast de hoogte van hun studiefinanciering bekijken. Ook kunnen ze bij sommige gemeenten alvast een afspraak maken voor inschrijving in de gemeente waar zij gaan wonen. Daarnaast is het bij enkele banken ook mogelijk om online een bankrekening openen. ‘We hebben gemerkt dat Caribische studenten sinds zij een BSN krijgen beter voorbereid naar Nederland komen’, aldus Monique Hoogerwerf, coördinator Caribisch gebied bij DUO. ‘Het is fijn om te zien dat ze hierdoor een betere start kunnen maken.’

Voorlichtingsbijeenkomsten
DUO is van 10 maart tot en met 11 april opnieuw aanwezig op alle Caribische eilanden – Saba, Sint Eustatius, Sint Maarten, Aruba, Curaçao en Bonaire – om voorlichting te geven over studeren in Nederland. Naast informatie over studiefinanciering en het BSN krijgen aankomende studenten en hun ouders ook alles te horen over de praktische zaken die ze moeten regelen.

Tijdelijke servicekantoren

Daarnaast opent DUO tijdelijke servicekantoren op elk van deze eilanden, waar studenten met vragen over hun studiefinanciering of andere studiezaken terecht kunnen. Ook oud-studenten kunnen hier informatie krijgen over het terugbetalen van hun studieschuld.

Een jaar lang een servicekantoor op Curaçao

Voor Curaçao staat er iets anders op de planning; DUO opent er dit voorjaar een servicekantoor voor een proefperiode van een jaar. Dit kantoor biedt een extra ondersteuning voor aankomende studenten en mensen met een studieschuld, om hen het hele jaar door persoonlijk van dienst te kunnen zijn. De medewerkers gaan daarnaast ook voorlichting geven op scholen.

CARIBBEAN STUDENTS BETTER PREPARED TO THE NETHERLANDS

Kraendijk,- The Education Executive Agency (Dienst Uitvoering Onderwijs, DUO) is visiting the Caribbean from 10 March up to and including 11 April 2025. Temporary service desks are opened during the visit. DUO also organises information sessions about student finance. This also focuses on how students can use the citizen service number (BSN) they receive to better prepare for their studies in the Netherlands. 

Since 1 April 2024, when students apply for student finance, they also automatically receive a BSN. This allows students to arrange a DigiD before leaving for the Netherlands, in order to log in on Dutch government websites. This allows students, among other things, to check the amount of their student finance in Mijn DUO. At some municipalities, they can also schedule an appointment in advance for registration in the municipality they intend to live in. In addition, at some banks, it is also possible to open a bank account online. ‘We noticed that Caribbean students come to the Netherlands better prepared since they have received a BSN’, said Monique Hoogerwerf, Caribbean Coordinator at DUO. ‘It is nice to see that this is helping them make a better start’.

Information sessions
DUO is again present on all Caribbean islands – Saba, Sint Eustatius, Sint Maarten, Aruba, Curaçao, and Bonaire – from 10 March up to and including 11 April to provide information on studying in the Netherlands. In addition to information on student finance and the BSN, prospective students and their parents are also given all information they need to arrange practical matters.

Temporary service desks

In addition, DUO is opening temporary service desks on each of these islands, where students can ask questions about their student finance or other study matters. Here, former students can also obtain information about the repayment of their study debt.

A year-long service desk on Curaçao

Something else is in the pipeline for Curaçao; DUO is opening a service desk there this spring for a one-year trial period. This desk offers additional support to prospective students and those with student debt to provide them with personalised services throughout the year. In addition, the staff are going to provide information at schools.
